Appearance: Škrat Čatež is a small dwarf. He has got legs, a beard and horns on his head.

Place of residence: He lives in swamps, forests and mountains.

Powers: He can change shape and imitate voices. He can scare people because he likes this.

Trivia: Once he was dropping stones from the mountains, stealing grapes and also drinking wine. In the places where he was, springs of drinking water appeared.

My opinion: In my opinion Škrat Čatež is a bad dwarf because he likes to scare people.

Name in English: The three-headed one

Species: 🏔️god🏔️

Gender: male

Appearance: His face is covered in a taira. He has a gold bandage on his neck.

Place of residence: He lives in the famous mountain in Slovenia named Triglav. Triglav is the highest mountain in Slovenia. It is 2864 m high.

Powers: He is supposed to have three heads because he can control the three worlds: Heaven, Earth and the Underworld.

Trivia: He does not want to see human sins.

There are myths that he has a black horse.

My opinion: In my opinion Troglav is quite cruel since he doesn't want to see the Earth's people.

At first it was believed that the highest Slovenian mountain was not connected with this deity, today they believe it is.

Name in English: werewolf

Species: half human, half animal

Gender: male

Appearance: He's tall and he's got dark brown hair. He usually doesn't wear clothes.

Powers: He can transform from human body to werewolf, he is very strong.

Trivia: Everything starts at full moon. When the full moon falls, he goes to a hill and transforms into a werewolf and he stays in that body until the morning is back.

My opinion: In my opinion this creature is awesome. I would love to have his abilities because I could just wake up in the middle of the night and transform into a different body for the night.

Name in English: Rusalka the fairy

Species: fairy

Gender: female

Appearance: She is young and very beautiful. She's got pale skin, long hair and wings. She's wearing light clothes made from the fog.

Place of residence: She lives in and near the water.

Powers: She can sing beautiful songs and she can seduce passers-by with her voice and beauty.

Trivia: Rusalka can be evil. When she plays with other Rusalkas in the water, they can climb onto the mill wheel and stop it, thereby breaking the millstones. They can destroy ditches and fishermen's nets too. Moreover, they can send storms and heavy rains to the Earth. Sometimes they steal linen and thread from sleeping women.

You can fight against the evil of Rusalkas by holding a leaf of a special plant called "common wormwood" in your hand.

My opinion: I don' t like Rusalka because she is evil.

Name in English: The Water Man

Species: half human and half monster

Gender: male

Appearance: He's covered in green scales. He's got green hair and a green tail.

Place of residence: He lives in underwater castles.

Powers: He can seduce women.

Trivia: France Prešeren, the most famous Slovenian poet, was in love with some woman. The woman broke his heart and then he wrote a ballad about the Water Man. The ballad is about a beautiful woman Urška. Urška could have any man she wanted but she chooses the Water Man, who takes her to his underwater world and nobody sees her again.

My opinion: I don't think he is a useful creature. I think he is so ugly.

Name in English: Golden Horn

Species: animal

Gender: male

Apearance: He is short but strong. He's got long golden horns.

Place of residence: He lives in the highest mountains of Slovenia.

Powers: He is immortal. If a shooter wounds him, a magic herb, called the Triglav flower, can grow from every drop of his blood.

Trivia: The Golden Horn owns all the treasures which are guarded by the multi-headed snake. Whoever manages to get his golden horn, would get all his treasures too.

My opinion: I like him because he's cool.

Name in English: The Kurent

Species: mythical god

Gender: male

Appearance: He is tall and he's wearing a sheepskin coat. On his belt there are cowbells and on his head there is a mask with horns. On his feet he's wearing special shoes.

Powers: With the loud shaking of his bells he can chase away winter and evil from the land, and invite in spring and a good year.

Trivia: "Kurentovanje" is a carnival in the oldest Slovenian town Ptuj. The carnival got its name after Kurenti. In the past only unmarried men were allowed to dress up as Kurenti.

My opinion: I like kurent because he's funny.

Name in English: Perkmandeljc, the dwarf of Idrija

Species: dwarf

Gender: male

Appearance: He is short and small. His hair is hidden under his hat. He has a grey long beard. He is wearing a small red hat on his head, a purple jacket and red trousers. He has got a light called "leščerba" in his hands.

Powers: He hasn't got any powers.

Trivia: One day he helped a miner digging ore. On payday the miner gave him half of his salary. If the minor wasn't fair, he would never see his family again.

My opinion: I like him, because he likes helping miners.

Name in English: Krampus

Species: demon

Gender: not known

Appearance: Parkelj is a demon-like creature with black messy fur. It has also got a long tail, long hairy fingers, horns, hooves and a goat's beard. In its hands it carries a bag of fruits for the good children. However, it also wears a rope around its hips and punishes the bad children with a rod or even a whip.

Powers: It can scare children.

Trivia: It is often mistaken for a bad guy, but it's good. It only punishes bad and naughty children but never the good ones.

My opinion: It's one of my favourite mythical creatures because he brings one of my favourite fruits - oranges!

Name in English: The Tenth Daughter

Gender: female

Species: human

Appearance: We don't know what she looks like.

Powers: She can understand the speech of animals and she knows a lot about herbs.

Trivia: She is the tenth daughter and has to leave her home. A fairy comes to take her away because she is the tithe for the gods. After seven years she returns to her village but nobody recognises her. Her family doesn't want to take her into the house, and this brings bad luck to the family. For example, her mother dies, or there is a severe storm with fire.

My opinion: She is a kind and sweet girl. I think her powers are pretty cool. In my opinion she likes travelling but she is sad because nobody recognises her when she returns home.

Name in English: Lintvar the dragon

Species: monster

Gender: male

Appearance: He's short. He has got scales and spikes on his back. He has got long whiskers.

Powers: He can fly.

Trivia: When this dragon flies, a terrible storm occurs that knocks down trees. People were afraid of him because he collected tax in his kingdom - two cows and one man.

My opinion: I chose this mythical creature because I love dragons and to find out more about it.

Name in English: the SilverWing

Species: animal (chamois)

Gender: male

Appearance: It's got beautiful silver wings. It's got four legs, two horns and black fur.

Place of residence: It lives on the Alpine peaks.

Powers: It can fly.

My opinion: I think it's interesting because it's pretty strong and can fly, and because it has the silver wings.

Name in English: Grandpa Frost

Species: human

Gender: male

Appearance: He is a bit chubby and tall. He has got a white beard and a brown fur hat. He's wearing a fur coat so he isn't cold because he comes only in winter. He always carries a stick.

Place of residence: He lives under the mountain Triglav in Kekec's Land.

Powers: He can make children happy. :)

Trivia: He comes every year on 1st January. He is like Santa but he does not give you what you want. He gives you fruits, candies and more.

My opinion: In Slovenia, there are three good men that can visit children in December - Saint Nicholas (6th December), Santa Claus (25th December) and Grandpa Frost (1st January). However, in my family only Saint Nicholas and Santa Claus bring me presents. I chose Grandpa Frost to learn more about him.

Name in English: the Fates

Species: fairies

Gender: female

Appearance: They are three beautiful women. The first one is wearing a blue dress, the second one a white dress, and the third one a red dress. They are holding a yarn in their hands. Weaving the yarn symbolizes the writing of someone's fate.

Powers: There are always three fairies at child's birth. They can shape the child's fate and foretell his/her future. One fairy determines the child's youth, the second one his/her adult life and the third one his/her death.

Trivia: According to the legend, when a child was born, people put a cake, wine and a loaf of bread on the table. They did this because they believed the fairies were sitting at the table at the time of birth. The fuller the table they found, the better the child's fate would be.

My opinion: I find it a bit scary that these fairies are believed to be the masters of someone's fate.
