"Why Read Poetry?"

"We should read poetry because only in that way can we know [humanity] in all [its] moods - in the most beautiful thoughts of [its] hear, in [its] farthest reaches of imagination, in the tenderness of [its] love, in the nakedness and awe of [its] soul confronted with the terror and wonder of the universe."
- Amy Lowell

Amy Lowell's statement as to why we should read poetry is truth to me. Poetry does a beautiful job depicting humanity's moods and emotions. Whether the emotions are happy, mad, sad, frustration, love, or any other emotion, poets are able to use different forms of poetry to explain and address their feelings. Everyone experiences different things differently, but through poetry readers are able to feel other's emotions and experiences.

Funeral Blues is hauntingly beautiful. Reading this poem shows a loving relationship between two men. It is beautifully written and the author was able to show how depressed and how raw his friend/significant other/brother's death was for him. The author, W.H Auden, wrote his sadness so well that I was able to feel like I was there in his presence while he was mourning. Through this poem I was able to feel the grief he was portraying like how Lowell describes poetry.

This poem is written in the view of a little boy loving his drunk father. There are many different emotions in this poem. When I read this poem I did find the speaker's attitude to be a little critical of his father, but at the same time affectionate as well. My Papa's Waltz can be related back to Amy Lowell's quote because I personally will never truly understand or be able to empathize with the author and his affection for his drunk father. But I am able to come to a closer understanding of the emotions that the author has portrayed through this poem.

The Silken Tent is a poem written about a woman. It is a metaphor of a tent and a women. How she flows freely, but is tied down by many strings. This poem captures the personality of a women who has responsibilities. This poem just goes to show the relationship between the author and the women is strong because he knows her so well.

The author of Traveling Through Dark captures a moment of pity. The pity that he feels is just so sad because the deer had a fawn still unborn. This poem can relate back to Lowell's reason to read poetry because it does show emotion. It explains his feelings of pity and sadness and how he feels useless for not being able to save the fawn. It creates a sense of reality like it were happening to myself with such description he gives.

I love music. I love creating music, listening to music, and admiring music. Music is to me what poetry is to Amy Lowell. Her description of poetry being emotional and all knowing of humanity's moods is how I feel about music. Music is able to capture different emotions with how it sounds and with the lyrics (if there are any). Depending on the tempo, whether it's upbeat, slow, or medium paced, puts me in different emotions. Music can alter how I feel in a split second because it resonates inside me. Yo-Yo Ma collaborates with other musicians in this video and there are just so many emotions when I listen to it. (Primarily the first two songs).

Simile was an interesting poem for me. N. Scott Momaday wrote this poem comparing his relationship to deer. There is a lot of confusion as to what happened in their relationship. It shows worry and confusion, but both still stand grounded in their love for one another. Relationships are difficult to describe, but through poetry people are able to describe how they feel.

The way he feels about high school is how I still feel about my high school years. The emotions he was able to portray through limited words is astounding. The passion he has for the failed school system is shown to readers like me who understand where he stands and how he feels about high school.

William Butler Yeats wrote this beautiful poem and the intimacy and love that he has for the other person is beautiful. To read how trustworthy and naive he is in this poem is interesting. Growing up and learning about the outside world and how you need to be careful about choosing your friends, traveling, and going shopping changes you. Yeats was able to portray that innocent, child-like point of view with this poem, something that grown-ups do not get to feel like anymore.

He Wishes for the Cloths of Heaven is my favorite poem from this unit. I love how intimate it is written and how much love they have the other person. The trust that the author is giving away is beautiful. To be so open minded and trustworthy of another person is hard to come by. But reading this poem gives me a sense of hope that maybe I too can someday find someone to give my dreams to.

Amy Lowell's quote can be easily related to this poem because the author was able to portray both experiences of the woman doing the whipping, and the boy who was being whipped. The aggressive behavior that is described and the scared and helpless little boy is just so realistic. Without poetry I would not be able to learn how to sympathize with someone who has been through this type of abuse. Without poetry I would never be able to experience both sides of a story like this one.

It is an interesting poem about how the author had lost things many time and how she says to her readers to get lost in losing things.
