Biometric Security Systems - Summary       {KG}

Biometric recognition forms a strong bond between a person and his identity as biometric traits cannot be easily shared, lost, or duplicated. Biometrics systems are commonly classified into two categories: physiological biometrics (fingerprint, iris, retina, hand geometry, face, etc) and behavioral biometrics (signature, keystrokes, voice, etc). The currently used password/token based systems have severe key issues in terms of security.

However there are several weakness of biometrics-based
authentication systems too. Some are internal such as voice recognition type may fail in noisy environment or due to an illness/throat infection of user. Some consider finger print scanners as vector source and may not cooperate with using it. Outside attacks may include fake data presentation, stealing traces, using Trojan horse code instead of matcher or simply overriding the match/un-match result. Infact its not just the technical asect of security breach that we need to worry about. A simlke act of corruption loke bribing the person incharge of the biometric data can undermine biometrics security.

The consequences can be severely damaging. The attacker can choose to either invariably restrict or grant access to anyone, or change right of access as desired.

Additional research needs to be done for biometric implementations and those aspects of security that cannot be reduced to just bits and bytes.

Overall, Biometric system of security offers a secure, fast, easy-to-use method of security. It is being heavily invested on by government and business people alike.

'Network security consists of the policies adopted to prevent and monitor authorized access, misuse, modification, or denial of a computer network and network-accessible resources. Network security involves the authorization of access to data in a network, which is controlled by the network administrator. Users choose or are assigned an ID and password or other authenticating information that allows them access to information and programs within their authority. Network security covers a variety of computer networks, both public and private, that are used in everyday jobs; conducting transactions and communications among businesses, government agencies and individuals. Networks can be private, such as within a company, and others which might be open to public access. Network security is involved in organizations, enterprises, and other types of institutions. It does as its title explains: It secures the network, as well as protecting and overseeing operations being done. The most common and simple way of protecting a network resource is by assigning it a unique name and a corresponding password.

Networks usually employ many copies of the same or similar software, with a copy on each of several (or all) machines in the network. This similarity, combined with connectivity, means that any fault in one copy of a program can create vulnerabilities spread across many machines. Mass market software often has flaws, and each flaw can be studied and exploited by an attacker. In large networks, a huge number of potential attackers can probe the software extensively; the result is that a network often includes many identified faults and software patches to counter them.

In a sense, security in networks is the combination and culmination of everything we know about security. A network's security depends on all the cryptographic tools at our disposal, good program development processes, operating system controls, trust and evaluation and assurance methods, and inference and aggregation controls.

Many of the controls useful for stand-alone systems are also useful in networks. But three controls are specific to networks: firewalls, intrusion detection systems, and secure e-mail. These controls have evolved from many years of research, both in security and in other computer science realms. They emphasize why we should know not only the history of security but also the relevance of other computing research. For example, firewalls are just an updated form of reference monitor. Similarly, intrusion detection profits from more fundamental research into pattern-matching and expert systems. And secure e-mail is really a carefully designed application of cryptography. You might think that controls such as these are the result of strokes of genius. But in fact, they reflect the long-term nature of knowledge and engineering practice; new ways to provide security build on a growing base of understanding and experience.

As useful as it is, it shouldn't go to the extend of violating a persons right of maintaining anonymity.

Network security consists of the policies adopted to prevent and monitor authorized access, misuse, modification, or denial of a computer network and network-accessible resources. Network security involves the authorization of access to data in a network, which is controlled by the network administrator.[citation needed] Users choose or are assigned an ID and password or other authenticating information that allows them access to information and programs within their authority. The most common and simple way of protecting a network resource is by assigning it a unique name and a corresponding password

  This article gives us the understanding of the need of network security. It basically gives the idea of how information can be insecure in terms of network transfer.
Network assets include the network infrastructure, applications programs and, most importantly, data. Recall that threats are actions or situations that offer potential harm to or loss of confidentiality, integrity, or availability, in the form of interception (eavesdropping or passive wiretapping), modification (active wiretapping, falsification, and compromise of authenticity), and denial of service. Moreover in networks we see new threat agents; anyone can be a victim of essentially a random attack.In a sense, security in networks is the combination and culmination of everything we know about security, and certainly everything we have discussed in this book so far. A network's security depends on all the cryptographic tools at our disposal, good program development processes, operating system controls, trust and evaluation and assurance methods, and inference and aggregation controls.But in fact, they reflect the long-term nature of knowledge and engineering practice; new ways to provide security build on a growing base of understanding and experience.

The security issues in our networked systems as described in this paper identify some of the work that needs to be done, and the urgency with which concerns need to be addressed. Dependence on some of the IT-based infrastructures in several countries is such that serious national consequences could result from the exploitation of their vulnerabilities. And as the density of networks increases, the necessity for transnational participation in improving network security increases. The changing technologies and the potential for changing threats is taxing our understanding of the threats and how to deal with them. When we approach the notion of “visions” of an information society, there are problems with describing this society as utopian in character. Globalism complicates the dilemma. As described by Keohane and Nye68, the interdependence of nations in complicity must now be considered multiple relationships, not simply single linkages, and as multi-continental distances, not simply regional networks. Due to the complexity and entanglement among networks and communities internationally, any increases in network security must involve the concerted efforts of as many nations as possible. We have ample experience in international regimes to understand that a great deal can be accomplished through such mechanisms, but not without taking note of their earlier trouble spots. We must learn from prior unexpected consequences in international cooperation, just as in the battle to secure networked systems, and be ever more cautious as we move forward toward some type of international action. But move forward quickly we must if the benefits from the use of our networked systems are to be realized in the myriad ways that they have been and are hoped for in the future. Nations must cooperate fully within their capability in order to contain the actions of those who threaten our networks, and to realize the positive vision that we have for our societies.

Computer security is a vast topic that is becoming more important because the world is becoming highly interconnected, with networks being used to carry out critical transactions. The environment in which machines must survive has changed radically since the popularization of the Internet. Deciding to connect a local area network (LAN) to the Internet is a security-critical decision. The root of most security problems is software that fails in unexpected ways. Although software security as a field has much maturing to do, it has much to offer to those practitioners interested in striking at the heart of security problems. The goal of this book is to familiarize you with the current best practices for keeping security flaws out of your software.

Good software security practices can help ensure that software behaves properly. Safety-critical and high-assurance system designers have always taken great pains to analyze and to track software behavior. Security-critical system designers must follow suit. We can avoid the Band-Aid-like penetrate-and-patch approach to security only by considering security as a crucial system property. This requires integrating software security into your entire software engineering process—a topic that we take up in the next chapter.
