Pi moves to a different school and tells his new classmates to call him "Pi". This is significant because Pi is ultimately standing up for himself, he is showing that his self-worth is high. He will start feeling more confident and this will help him feel more important. "In each class on the first day he wrote “Pi” on the chalkboard, as well as the first few digits of the number pi. The name stuck." (Martel 13). The number of pi is full of contradictions and transformations. It is an irrational number. It can't be expressed by any combination of rational numbers. The number of pi is a metaphor for the story of Pi Patel. Pi, the number, is irrational. Pi from an early age had a huge fascination for Religion. When his family is in tree fields, he finds a church. The man says that God loves him, and this gives him faith for the rest of the story. He has a sense that God is guiding him. "It was my first clue that atheists are my brothers and sisters of a different faith, and every word they speak speaks of faith." (Martel 17). Pi sees his teacher, Mr. Kumar, as a man of faith even though he is an atheist. Pi feels drawn to the study of religions. He has no interest in reading just one religious text. Instead, he explores Christianity, Islam, and Hinduism. Pi connects with three key concepts that unite these religions: God, love, and light. Pi's choice to have faith leads him to eventually accept atheists. "Richard Parker had been a zoo animal as long as he could remember, and he was used to sustenance coming to him without his lifting a paw." (Martel 73). In the natural world, Richard Parker would hunt, but for most of his life, he lived in a world in which food and water were provided to him. The reason is unknown. ''The ship sank. It made a sound like a monstrous metallic burp. Things bubbled at the surface and then vanished. Everything was screaming: the sea, the wind, my heart.'' (Martel 56).Pi looses his family. He is left stranded in the ocean with Richard Parker.

This scene is a defining moment in the relationship of Pi and tiger. "That was the terrible cost of Richard Parker. He gave me a life, my own, but at the expense of taking one. He ripped the flesh off the man’s frame and cracked his bones. The smell of blood filled my nose. Something in me died then that has never come back to life." (Martel 120).

From now on, Richard Parker starts to respect Pi. Pi now sees that Parker has a meaning to his life. "Richard Parker had been a zoo animal as long as he could remember, and he was used to sustenance coming to him without his lifting a paw." (Martel 74). After Richard Parker kills the French castaway, Pi ponders the tiger’s actions and how they impact him. Richard Parker acted as a typical predator, but Pi imbues his actions with deeper meaning. Even though he did not deal the fatal blow, he takes on an outsized responsibility for the Frenchman’s death. The interpretation that Piisactually Richard Parker would explain Pi’s feelings of guilt.
