Reading was sometimes my enemy
lost its meaning in an instant

Reading would be my frustration
mom said "It will make me smarter"
Reading a chore I loathed
Chapter books made it all harder

Reading was too time consuming
read and reread and grasp none
Reading made me feel stupid
I didn't get how some thought it fun

Then I found stories I loved
Then I found series that got me
Then I found audio books
Then I found characters like me

Now I read thrillers and mysteries
Books that keep me intrigued
Now I listen and read together
Comprehension at my own speed

Now I read every day
with my follow finger or ears
Now I can say "I'm a reader"
It just took 32 years!
