Students worked in groups as advertises who had been hired by different political parties in Germany in 1933. They had to try to figure out how to convince people to vote for their party based on supplied party platforms. It became clear that the group trying to sell the Weimar Government, the SPD, had a difficult task. This was the government that signed the Treaty of Versailles and governed over Germany during hyperinflation of 1923 and the Great Depression in 1930. While they had a liberal agenda, people suffered from hunger and unemployment under their rule. Communists wanted to help workers, but the Russian Revolution was not far away and the horror stories coming out of Russia were a deterrent. The Catholic Center Party promised moral rule, but did not promise to restore the country to greatness. The Nazis' message to restore Germany to greatness, to undo the harsh conditions of the Treaty of Versailles, and to rebuild pride in the country helped Nazis gain power through elections. Although Hitler was clear in his book, Mein Kampf that he wanted world domination and to eliminate Jews and Communists, people did not take that part seriously.

Students did a great job working in groups. This is an odd project since once done, the work was immediately recycled. While the artistry was terrific, we do not want to have swastikas hanging up in the room, historic context or not. Thus we have a photo record of them here, but they are not on display.

What are different techniques in trying to get people to think how you want them to think, vote for your candidate, or buy your product? We did a crash course in different methods of manipulation. Not only did students learn methods they could apply in our poster lesson, they learned how to identify way modern advertisers are manipulating the public. It is always good to be aware of the messages we are being bombarded with on the internet, social media, tv, radio, and even in cafes and bars. We also discussed the unrealistic portrayal that models give of what people should look like. In fact, the models do not even look the way they are shown in adds because they are photoshopped and manipulated.
