Armenia is the homeland of the Armenian people. Armenia originally spanned further into Turkey but was made smaller when the Turks forced them off of their land. There was a large Armenian population in Turkey for that reason. During the beginning of the genocide many Armenians attempted to flee to Armenia but most were captured or murdered by the Turkish soldiers. Though there are Armenian people all around the world, Armenia is still home to most Armenians and a show of how they survived even after the death of 1.5 million people.

Turkey

Turkey, formerly the Ottoman Empire, is where the Armenian genocide took place. The Turkish government were the ones who orchestrated the attacks. The genocide was an attempt to rid Turkey of all Armenians by either killing them or deporting them and leaving them to die. All of the Armenians living in Turkey were forced into camps or marched to the desert in Syria to be slaughtered. The ancient Ottoman Empire consisted of both Turkey and Armenia until the Turks forces the Armenians off their land.

Balkan Peninsula

The modern Balkan Peninsula was once apart of the Ottoman Empire. After the Balkan war of 1912, the Turkish lost control of the entire peninsula. The loss had a large impact on the Ottoman society and they blames it on the Christians. The large majority of the balkans who were against the empire were Orthodox Christians. This caused turmoil between the Christians and the Muslims and reinforced the idea of the Turks that Christians were evil.

Deir el-Zor, Syria

Deir el-Zor is the desert that separates Syria from Turkey. The Turkish soldiers would take the Armenians from their homes and march them into the desert. The Armenians were told they were being evacuated but on the march they were not given food or water. The Turks let the Armenians die of natural causes first but no one revolted because they were scared with the powerful men already being dead. Once they were deep into the desert they were slaughtered. They were stabbed with bayonets and their bodies were left to rot or in some cases thrown into mass graves. The desert is now home to thousands of mass graves and stray skeletons of the Armenians murdered there.

Euphrates River, Syria

In order to escape Turkey and be safe from the Turkish soldiers, the Armenian people had to cross the Euphrates river. The Armenians would fill boats with refugees and orphans to send them to safety away from Turkey. When the Turks discovered people escaping that way they began marching Armenian prisoners down to the river, slaughtering them with bayonets and dumping the bodies in the water. When the Armenians were marched down through the Syrian desert, their only source of water was the river. When the bodies in the water began to rot and decay the water would become polluted and deadly when ingested.

Constantinople, İstanbul, Türkiye

On April 24th, 1915, the first attack on the Armenian people took place. The Turkish government arrested and murdered hundreds of religious and community leaders for the Armenians. Constantinople is considered the starting place of the genocide as the first arrest occurred there and it is where the young Turks planned and executed the Genocide.

Russia

Russia was on the side of the allied powers during WW1. Germany declared war on Russia and Germany had an agreement with the Ottoman Empire. The Ottomans and the Russians became enemies. The Russians destroyed the Ottoman army in a battle and some Armenians fought on the side of the Russians. With anger over the battle and no way to get rid of it the Ottomans blamed the Armenians for the loss. The Armenians were accused of treason because of the war and the young Turks used that to spread more hate towards the Armenians and begin the genocide.

Germany

Germany was one of the central powers during World War 1. Turkey, under the rule of the young Turks, joined Germany in the war. The Turks hoped to fix their economy by joining the war. Germany provided supplies for the fight against Russia and for the Genocide. The Germans declaring war on Russia lead to the Armenians going to battle with the Russians. The loss of that battle was one of the major reasons for the genocide.
