A recent

study that examined the transcripts of in-depth interviews with 14 users of an AI companion chatbot called Replika reported that “under conditions of distress and lack of human companionship, individuals can develop an attachment to social chatbots if they perceive the chatbots’ responses to offer emotional support, encouragement, and psychological security.

For example, where employees may once have consulted with a coworker to get a second opinion on a decision, or obtain additional information, AI can (much more efficiently) perform these tasks (Davenport & Kirby, 2016). Yet AI systems, in contrast to those coworkers, are deficient in terms of providing an engaging and socially rich user-experience (Mühlhoff, 2020; Tizhoosh & Pantanowitz, 2018). We posit that this may be problematic because interacting with AI may (similarly as interacting with human coworkers) activate primitive processes within people that have evolved to monitor the nature and quality of social interactions with others (Leary & Baumeister, 2000; Sussman et al., 2005).

In summarizing that work, however, Reissmann et al.

Across millennia, people evolved internal systems to gauge the quality of relationships with others. These systems have remained effective in a workplace that, just as in primitive tribal communities, prioritized social interactions with coworkers. Yet, the advent of digital, asocial AI systems and their incorporation into employee work, threatens to upend the operation of these systems. We show how employee interactions with their new AI colleagues may lead to an increased need for affiliation as well as loneliness. The mixed consequences of these states paint an important, but sobering, picture of the future of AI augmentation efforts. While this future continues apace, managers must pay heed to outcomes experienced by their human employees.

This article was written by Angela Yang, a culture and trends reporter for NBC News, and it is a secondary source. She graduated from Boston University, earning a degree in International Relations and Journalism. It was published on Oct. 23, 2024, at 3:48 PM PDT. It was published online, recorded as a video, discussed in a podcast, and possibly aired on the 24-hour news. NBC is a mega news corporation, probably trying to get as many viewers as possible. They run emotional and dramatic tales to grab people's attention. They are the ones that pushed this story, though the writer may have a different perspective. As a journalist and reporter; research, writing, truth, fact, and justice seem to be common values. It cannot be said for certain that this article was "just for money" but at the end of the day; news outlets do profit off of suffering. It was written to get views and clicks, attempting to grab peoples' eyes. Probably geared towards teenagers and up, due to content, but isn't necessarily vulgar or offensive. This article is nonpartisan, leaving the deciding up to the reader. No personal pronouns are used, and no clear stance is taken. It is purely a report of what happened and what is happening because of it. It is a highly controversial topic, as AI as well as mental health have been in the spotlight for some time now. This is likely to draw more readers/viewers. The author is biased towards professionalism and spreading facts. She is also, however, biased towards getting paid, gaining respect, building ethos within her career, and more. She left out previous histories that could've also contributed to the suicide. This information can be verified, as it is an ongoing legal case.

This article was written by Nilay Patel, editor-in-chief for The Verge, and it is a secondary source. In 2003, Patel earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science from the University of Chicago. In 2006, he received his Juris Doctor from the University of Wisconsin Law School. It was published on Apr. 19, 2023. It was published online, discussed in a podcast, and possibly printed as a feature in a magazine. The Verge is a technology-based news corporation, probably trying to get as many viewers as possible. They review the latest tech and discuss controversies such as this to grab people's attention. However, The Verge is just a singular magazine under the corporation Vox Media. They are the ones that push the stories, though the writer may have a different perspective. With a company as big as Vox, it is safe to assume that they are encouraging their smaller magazines to be exciting, attention-grabbing, and most of all interesting. Their goal is to make money. As a journalist and reporter like Patel; research, writing, truth, fact, and justice seem to be common values. It cannot be said for certain that he wrote his article "just for money" but at the end of the day; they do profit off of drama such as this. It was written to get views and clicks, attempting to grab peoples' eyes. Probably geared towards teenagers and up, due to content. Children don't necessarily know or care about tech giants and lawsuits. This article is mostly nonpartisan, leaving the deciding up to the reader. Personal pronouns are used, but no clear stance is taken. Patel's writing looks as if it was a transcript for a speech. The use of personal pronouns, figures of speech, quips, and anecdotes make it feel like the reader is having a conversation. Still, it is purely a report of what happened, what is happening because of it, and the difficult situation it brings up. It is a controversial topic, as AI has been in the spotlight for some time now. This is likely to draw more readers/viewers. Patel leaves out any pathos or personal interviews with the subjects themselves. He mainly talks about the mess of legal implications that this situation, and situations like it, are bound to bring up. The fact that he went to law school makes sense why he would be saying all of that about the suit. The author is biased towards professionalism and spreading facts. He is also, however, biased towards getting paid, gaining respect, building ethos within his career, and more. This information can be verified, as it is an ongoing legal case.

This article that was created through the Journal of Applied Psychology was written by 8 authors. Those people include Pok Man Tang, Joel Koopman, Ke Michael Mai, David De Cremer, Jack Zhang, Philipp Reynders, Chin Tung Stewart Ng, and I-Heng Chen. These people also conducted studies and analyzed their data. It is copyrighted by the American Psychological Association, and published in June of 2023. It was published to multiple journals and cited by many more. This document exists to demystify a question that is more and more frequently being asked: what is AI doing? They created this piece of work to answer that question. The intended audience is most likely other professionals from this sort of field. The vocabulary is academic, the sources are official, and the charts and graphs shown are not simple. The authors are probably marketing this towards other academics, such as themselves. Not a puff piece, not for the news, not for the public. It may be cited by those, but that is not what people will go to on their own. We can tell that these authors are very intelligent people. They have had years of experience in their respective fields of study. This piece was created in a time of discovery, confusion, and curiosity to learn more. It reflects this because it is, quite literally, a study. The authors seem to represent an anti-AI standpoint, though personal pronouns are not used. This is not an opinion piece, but i get the feeling that it is not nonpartisan. This study seems to be biased against ai, and biased for human interaction. The pros are addressed, but in a very similar article, Impact of AI on the MH of Manufacturing Workers, they were able to conclude almost the exact opposite. Though these are different studies, not measured the same way, not done in the same place, almost impossibly different; they are both took the same question and answered it in very different ways. This study is arguing that productivity and a lack of conflict does not outweigh isolation felt by working with an algorithm. They are very thorough with this study.

This article was created by Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists and written by Dawn Stover, a contributing editor for the site and magazine. It is a secondary source. It was published September 11th, 2023. It was published to the website, as well as in the magazine itself. It was published in Chicago, IL. This document exists, according to the magazine, as a "guide to ensuring science and technology make life on Earth better, not worse." The author created this because it is her job. However, She seems to be an experienced writer and would probably be able to find work elsewhere. Within a magazine such as this, it is safe to assume that those who choose to work for it genuinely believe in the cause they are writing for. The intent is to spread awareness and give warning. The intended audience seems to be adults. It is not geared towards children, but it wouldn't be a stretch for a teenager to read. This piece was created to educate and help readers learn more about what is going on. This piece reflects that by warning of possible dangers. We can tell that AI is a controversial new topic, and its capabilities have yet to be fully discovered. We can tell that the author is extremely wary of this new capability, during this time of discovery. This author is biased against AI, and the way she writes in the article makes that clear. It doesn't talk too much about the positive impacts of AI on mental health, but the point of it is to warn people, so it is a bit more understandable why that would be left out.

This is a secondary source. It was created through the proceedings of the 55th Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences of 2022. The authors are Tianling Xie and Iryna Pentina from the University of Toledo. It was published coming out of the 2022 conference. It was published by HICSS, the conference, and the university it was held at; in Manoa, Hawaii. This document exists to officially shed light and share personal findings on a topic that had not yet been fully researched. Replika had only been around for 5 years when this research was conducted, and character.ai had only been around for less than a year. The intended audience, quite literally, were the other attendees of the conference. That's who the authors wrote it for. However, they also had it published and it is now open to anyone. It is not geared towards younger children or teens, however its language is not impossible. There is talk of sexual relations between the subjects and their bots, but only in a qualitative manner; not glorified or thoroughly described. We can tell that the authors are curious academics, and that they disapprove of this whole schtick. Personal pronouns are not used in regards to what the authors personally believe is right or wrong. A big limitation of this study is that it only followed 14 participants in the study. They make this very clear, and are careful to not make stern generalizations, only hypothesis.

It was created by the New York Times magazine, and written by Natasha Singer. It was published April 8th, 2024. It was published by the New York Times, in New York. This document exists as an informational piece. It was a story for the news, and a cautionary tale. This document was written for the sole purpose of communication. The intent is to spread awareness on the subject, the violations, and the real repercussions of actions such as this. The intended audience is teenagers to adults, and that is who the author wrote it for. It is not explicit, but the details aren't something younger children need to be concerned with. We can tell that the author feels for the girls and their situation, not leaning too much on the boys' side of things or the defense. She is standing with the girls against this nonconsensual invasion of privacy. The controversy within the piece also covers how the schools are or are not handling it. We can tell that this period of time is an experimental one, where pros as well as cons are being figured out. Because she does not ask anything of the other side of the story, i suppose it could be biased. However, I fully excuse this bias, as I think there is nothing these boys could say to make what they did better. They messed up big time and I, like others, don't want to hear excuses.

This article was created by EL PAIS, and written by Clara Angela Brascia, a writer for the magazine. It was published on January 26th, 2024 through EL PAIS, the magazine. This document exists to inform and entertain. The author created this piece of work, firstly because it is her job, then secondly because she might care about the subject. We can tell that in this time period, there are a lot of unknowns and clearer boundary lines need to be drawn. The pros and cons of AI still have yet to be fully discovered. We can tell that the author is standing with the women violated, in the way she talks of them. This is a very controversial topic, as it involves many a-list celebrities and some questionable breaking of boundaries.

The internet has been filled with sexually explicit images of one of the most influential people of the moment: the singer Taylor Swift. Once again, as so often lately, these were not real photos, but nudes created with artificial intelligence, or deepfake porn.

One of the most prominent accounts on the social media platform X accumulated over 47 million views, 24,000 reposts and hundreds of thousands of “likes” before it was suspended for violating the company’s policies. But it circulated for nearly a day, more than enough time to reignite concerns about the danger of the proliferation of fake AI-generated pornography that targets women.

The “pornification” of women using artificial intelligence has skyrocketed in recent months. According to a recent study on deepfakes carried out in the United States by Home Security Heroes, 48% of men acknowledged having seen fake pornography at least once. And “74% of users who have engaged with deepfake pornography did not report feeling guilty about their consumption,” suggesting that deepfake content has become an accepted and normalized practice in adult entertainment preferences.
