The French government was called the Estates General which is made up of 3 estates. The 1st estate was made up of the church/clergy, the 2nd estate was made up of the nobles, and the 3rd estate was made up of the commoners. The 1st and 2nd estate didn't have to pay taxes while the 3rd estate did. Every estate got 1 vote, which meant the 3rd estate was always out voted when it came down to raising taxes or lowering taxes. The 3rd estate wanted to change to the National Assembly which gave representation based on population. The 1st and 2nd estate didn't like that idea because the 3rd estate has a bigger population than the 2 of them combined. When the 3rd estate went to show up to the national assembly, they found that they were locked out, they gathered in a nearby tennis court and that is where they took the Tennis Court Oath. The Tennis Court Oath was a promise made by the people of the 3rd estate say they wouldn't leave until a constitution for the Free People of France was written. King Louis XVI decided to imprison every one that was in the Tennis Court at that moment.

Once the people from the Tennis Court are imprisoned the rest of the 3rd estate felt like it was an attack on their rights by King Louis XVI. They felt they needed to arm themselves, so they went to the Bastille to rise up against the soldiers. They ended up successfully freeing the political prisoners and also gained access to weapons in the armory. From the Bastille they marched to the Palace of Versailles because they were angry over the price of bread. They had to use sawdust in place of flour when making bread, but then that same sawdust bread had its price increased by people who didn't even eat it. It was reasonable to be angry about the price of bread being raised because they were making 15-20 cents a day, that makes it hard to pay for food and rent when you make so little. The 3rd estate then came up with a government that would keep the monarchy and strengthen the weak leadership. They wanted King Louis XVI to work with the people, kind of like a constitutional monarchy. Marie Antoinette then sent a letter to her brother in Austria, telling him to bring his army and save them. They were then convicted of treason and trying to launch a counter revolution against the people. Thats when Robespierre stepped up and took leadership, he created the first republic. The First Republic was the government at the time that was in charge of King louis XVI and Marie Antoinette's execution, it also had the goal of working with the people to resolve their needs. During Robespierre's rule he was known for the Reign of Terror, he killed over 70,000 people using the guillotine. After a while the people got angry because Robespierre wouldn't give up power, so they executed him.

After Robespierre was executed, they put Boneparte Napoleon in charge. He made some huge changes for France, first he made the Napoleonic Codes, which simplified the laws for France. He also brought back slavery, eliminated the Estates System, allowed freedom of religion, made a centralized government for France, improved his relationship with the Pope, Increased education, and sold the North American territory. All of this benefitted France because using all these political changes he was able to conquer most of Europe. When Napoleon died, he left behind a legacy for France because he conquered Continental Europe, and he installed rules for every country he conquered.
