This is presented early in the book when she breaks Tomas's rules when Tereza arrives with a suitcase, meaning dependence of Tereza towards him. She packed her entire life into this heavy suitcase, all her past trauma with her mom, and the incidents she used to pass with her stepfathers. The traumas with her mom still haunt Tereza. Tereza craves for that feeling of being important and special that her mom never gave her. Her mom talked about Tereza’s body as if it weren’t important, as if she made no difference, hers was just like the rest. In many ways this is transmitted into her relation with Tomas.
