The brine is pumped into evaporative ponds where it sits for twelve to eighteen months. Along side this is a staggering piece of data. It takes about 500,000 gallons of water to get 2 thousand pounds, or one ton, of Lithium. This isn’t okay for places with not much water. In places like Salar de Atacama in Chile, the water cannot be used as it is. 65% of the area’s water is used in mining activities. It gets less than 15 millimetres of annual rainfall. Then toxic chemicals are used in the separation process, chemicals like hydrochloric acid. It can seek for the evaporation pools into water supplies. It can also affect air quality.

But, how much of that cost will be recouped in fuel savings over the life of the vehicle? The cost of gasoline is constantly growing. Electric vehicles require no gas at all. As well, they require little to no maintenance, with no oil changes, no spark plug and wires, and no exhaust systems. And, the government gives incentives for people who buy electric, sometimes up to 7,500 dollars off their next tax bill. Over time, electric vehicles pay themselves off.
