Dutch fur traders originally settled in Connecticut in 1614. However, they never colonized Connecticut due to lack of interest--the Dutch focused primarily on settlement in Manhattan Island.

In 1633, Puritans from the Massachusetts Bay colony took over. Their leader, Thomas Hooker, is considered one of the founders of the colony of Connecticut.

Connecticut is one of the New England colonies. It is located in a mountainous region with poor soil. For this reason, wheat cannot be grown in Connecticut. Examples of crops that are grown here include pumpkin, squash, corn, and beans. Because Connecticut borders Long Island Sound and the Atlantic Ocean, fish and whales are valuable resources as well. Additionally, Connecticut's dense forests allow timber to rise as a valuable resource.

Connecticut's natural resources and geography helped mold its economy, which is based on ship building, timber products, the fur trade, rum, whiskey, and beer.

Connecticut was colonized by the English Puritans, a group of Protestants. Puritans do not tolerate any other religion. They resist pleasures and are generally modest.

Connecticut became a self-governed Charter Colony in 1662. Executive power was held by the Governor of Colonial Connecticut, and judicial powers were given to the Governor's Council of Colonial Connecticut.
