Being an educator I have seen diversity in many ways. In my first school we had a lot of economic diversity and had to adjust for that. We recently had changed boundaries that included a very very rich area and very low income area. One way we reached the needs of our students was changing online homework assignments to the old school pen and pencil so all students could do the work. We also provided homework folders for the students that included everything that was needed to complete the homework (pencil, eraser, scratch paper, and in some cases a little light).
I am now at a new school and we have a large diversity in our acedemic test scores. We have had to focus more of our time on RTI time and split classes so that we can help all students becuz the diversity is so great! I’ve found that having a strong team and administration is very vital when you are faced with such a diverse group!

I always encouraged active participation of parents. I tried to incorporate pictures and books promoting a culturally sensitive environment for my students. I also
recognized that diversity included learning diversities and provided content based on readiness and interests.

I think one of the most important things of teaching to a diverse classroom is being considerate of others despite our differences. I teach first grade, and one of the first things I introduced was what opinions were. I explained how my favorite animal is an elephant, and I picked another student to tell me theirs. It was not the same, and I then said, "Just because their favorite animal is not the same mine does not mean that they wrong. We are all different and come from different places. However, we need to be respectful and understand that we can disagree with others and it is okay. We do not have to be the same." After that introduction to opinions, I have tried to include different things to let them know that I love and appreciate them for who they are. I try to show them how we can celebrate what makes us different instead of worrying or being upset about being different. Diversity is something that needs to be approached in the classroom, but by instilling that compassion and respect early on it could save some heartache in the future.

I think it’s very important to teach our children at an early age to respect all people regardless of their age, race, gender, religion or any other discriminatory reason. If children learn this principle early, chances are good they will continue this behavior throughout their lives and inspire others to treat other the same. The golden rule Of “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you” will never go out of style. We as adults need to set the example and practice what we preach.

There are many ways to promote and accept diversity in the classroom. The teacher needs to have books in the classroom which encourages students to learn either a new language or refreshes their home language. Materials around the room could be labeled in different languages and the teacher could spotlight one student every month that could share a special custom or food that is important to his or her family. This helps all of the classmates bond and get to know one another.
