Lauren Tarshis used "Imagine you are..." in the text to make you picture the time and what it felt like to be there. She also used "You're" in the Introduction, "You're surprised at how modern this city is" and "The heat makes you thirsty, so you stop at the big public fountain made of carved stone." In A Vanished World, she states "YOU survived your day in Pompeii. YOU are one of the lucky few who made it far enough." So, this makes this non-fiction piece turn into a 2D person view.

The author makes you feel like you are in the story by using second person words like "you". In the first paragraph on page 5, the text states, " Now imagine that you are there." and "Let's take a trip back to ancient Rome." so the author makes you picture the scene in your head and you feel as if you are there. Also, the author uses vivid detail and descriptive language to make the reader(s) picture the story in their head and make them fit in and feel like they are inside the story. Also, on page 8, the article states, " Push your way past the donkey carts and get through the gates of the city. Grab hold of the hand of the hand of a little boy who has become separated from his family. Keep moving." The way Lauren Tarshis says that makes you feel as if this is going on around you and you are thinking this in your head. You can picture the whole scene going on around you and you are witnessing it. Those are the reasons I think the author makes you feel as if you are there.

There are many effects like this one that it was super hard to breath for lot's of people because of the ash from the eruption.

The purpose of page 6 is to tell you about Pompeii itself, and how the people in Pompeii live. It is basically just there to let you in on some background knowledge, so it doesn't just jump right out at you. Imagine the article starting like this, One very hot day in the very mysterious city of Pompeii there was a mountain named Mt. Vesuvius. It was early in the morning every one was out doing there daily routine then, BOOM!!, BOOM!!It would be very quick non informative start and usually you don't want that especially when the article is supposed to be partially non-fiction. From page 6 of the article I can conclude that Pompeii is very modern for its time period and that they also had unfair slavery like other places that also did, sometimes they made slaves become gladiators which were people who fought against other gladiators and animals to give others entertainment even though they can get very hurt or even die in battle because there are no limits in the battle a bear or other gladiator is allowed to kill you and no one will even care or feel bad for you.So from page six I learned that Pompeii is a very modern and sometimes gruesome or unfair place to live.
