A. Freud proposed the theoretical belief of Erogenous Zones. In this, he believed that children gain pleasure from all physical activities involving any sexually sensitive body part. He named these regions Erogenous Zones and he believed that possessing such characteristics are essential for survival.

B. Freud also proposed the belief of Fixations. He believed that too little or too much gratification would stunt the psychological growth and development of a child. He defined this as a Fixation.

Stage #1. Oral Stage: This stage is centered around the mouth. Infants/toddlers display an excessive tendency to place things in their mouth. Too much gratification for such behavior leads to oral fixations in adulthood. Too little gratification may lead to a clingy or needy personality in adulthood.

Stage #2. Anal Stage: This stage is centered around the anal cavity. Toddlers become fascinated with the gained ability to control the muscles involved in holding and releasing waste. This is the toilet training stage and too harsh of a training may lead to perfectionism later on in adulthood. However lax training may lead to lack of self-discipline later on in adulthood.

Stage #3. Phallic Stage: This stage is centered around the genital area. In this stage, both genders tend to fight with inhibitions of wanting the parent of the opposite gender in a sexual way while becoming a rival of the same gender parent. Freud believed that failure to resolve this conflict will result in men becoming resistant to masculine authority. It also may play a part in low self-worth and homosexuality.

Stage #4. Latent Stage: Freud believed that sexual impulses remain in a dormant stage during this stage.

Stage #5. Genital Stage: Since the child can no longer fulfill their desire to engage in sexual intimacy with the parent of the opposite sex, they then decide to look for other available partners of the opposite sex. However, their sought after partners will possess traits or features of the parent that they long to be with sexually.
