Wise people overcome their problems choosing to address them and find solutions versus foolish people who choose to block them without looking for a solution. They suffer the consequence of having the problem potentially heighten and in so doing make it worse. Simply putting up a wall, in essence ignoring the problem, only serves to have it intensify, worsen and eventually do more damage than had it been dealt with initially. Overcoming a problem through solution-based thinking is the core meaning of this proverb. During the second world war, had the United States intervened earlier, Pearl Harbor may not have occurred as well as many more lives being saved. Had we addressed the problem, looking for a solution sooner, instead of not intervening because we were geographically far enough away that we thought we were safe; we may have saved many more lives. Had Israel and Palestine built a proveriable bridge and created a two-state nation, without a doubt current bloodshed and unrest on both sides would be nonexistent. However, they took the “dam” approach and suffer the consequences to this day. The same can be said for North Ireland and Ireland. Had the Catholics and Protestants realized they had commonalities versus focusing on their differences perhaps resolution would have been swifter. Obstructionist thinking (dam) is short term, while solution based thinking (bridge) creates long term results.
