“You tired, ain’t you? Tired of everything. Me, the boy, the way we live – this bet-up hole – everything. Ain’t you? (She doesn’t look up, doesn’t answer) So tired – moaning and groaning all the time, but you wouldn’t do nothing to help, would you? You couldn’t be on my side that long for nothing, could you?”

Do you agree with the artist’s message here? Does it stand up in 2023? Does this line really say what the artist thinks it’s saying?

I agree with the artist's message in this quote because they're tired of living in poverty yet they are unable to do anything. This shows just how miserable everything is and Ruth doesn't believe things will get better anytime soon; I can relate to Ruth's thinking because when things have been bad for so long you're sometimes unable to see the light at the end of the tunnel, and you're unable to believe in others and give up on yourself along the way.

This quote is still relevant in 2023 and especially in Seattle because of the current homeless population and the uprising economy. The economy is only going up, resulting in making things like houses, food, and clothing more expensive and inaccessible to people who receive a lower to almost no income. For example, I recently went to Costco after a month and the 12 pack of Cup Noodles that was once only $5, is now $13. The economy is only rising and because of this, basic human necessities are becoming difficult to access.

I believe the artist is really saying what the artist thinks it’s saying. The message is clear that poverty is stressing all parties out and making people lose hope in new possible opportunities.

1) Do the themes of poverty translate from the book to the movie (is it how you pictured it when reading?)

It doesn't seem as miserable in the movie as it was written out in the book. It does seem cramped and not very spacious in their house, and signs of poverty is probably one of the main topics repeating throughout the book and in the movie. All in all, the book is somewhat how as pictured from the book to the movie and it still portrays similar emotions.

2) Compare and contrast characters from the book to the movie.

Walter is very ambiguous with his ideas, though he seems a little more hopeless in my opinion in the book compared how to how it actually was portrayed in the movie. Lena wants to control others and controls the family as well as the insurance money. Beneatha is able to stand her ground when it comes to her own opinions.
