In chapter 3 we are introduced to Gurduloo and that Charlemange assigned Gurduloo to be Agilufs squire almost as a joke. In the beginning of the chapter it shared how charlemange was marching into the town with his padalins and everyone seemed to adore him and praise him."Thats the king; that is our Charles!"(Calvino 23).

Gurduloo: the man who exists but does not know he exists
"He thinks the ducks are him. Gurduloo's like that, a bit careless..." (Calvino 25). This excerpt suggests Gurduloo's aimlessness and shamelessness.
"'[His name] varies according to the place he's in,' said the wise gardener, 'and to the Christian or Infidel armies he attaches himself to'" (Calvino 28). This quote can suggest the way Gurduloo believes he is anything from a duck to a pear, as he could change his personality as he changes his name.
In a way he is opposite Agilulf who does not exist but feels as though he does, as Gurduloo feels he exists as everything but himself though he physically does exist.

The setting of the chapter took place in their village where they duel.
There are not many implications as to a specific village or part of the country aside from the fact it is somewhere near the camp mentioned in chapter one, which is located "Beneath the red ramparts of Paris" (Calvino 3).

"The dirty mess tin... 'De sure les ponts de Bayonne... came the voices still further away" (Calvino 31-32).
In the beginning of the excerpt, the relationship between Gurduloo and animals is strengthened with the introduction of a hedgehog. This not only foreshadows a particular affinity for caring for horses, but also highlights the innocence of Gurduloo's soul. Next, the agitation between Agiluf and his colleagues is progressed when his fellow soldiers make witty remarks following the untimely departure of Gurduloo. Agiluf's decision to respond with words of decree further the notion of his strict regime and tendency to enact the exact words of Charlemenge. Finally, the song heard in the distance translates to "from the bridges of Bayonne." Bridges signify a looming personal path or change, foreshadowing a great shift in the state of the war and Agiluf's demeanor.
