As a child — I loved being read to, when I wasn’t able to read. My parents would use inflection and voices to engage my interest. They read many picture books before bed and I would always want a book before bed. Some of those books were; Dr. Seuss, Don’t go to the end of this book, Hungry Caterpillar, Tickle book, etc.

During grade school I was in a love/ hate relationship with reading. I loved listening to my teachers read books like: Boxcar children, Pippy Longstocks, and Wayside stories. But, when my mother wanted me to read independently, I was very reluctant and despised reading. During my independent reading I read: Harry Potter and The Pixie Hollow books. Although I desired to read the fairy books and Thea Stilton and I would look at the pictures and try to picture the stories in my head.

Middle School - Independant reading:

In Middle School I loved English class, and we read an array of English books that I loved. I discovered Edgar Allan Poe and his story of the Telltale Heart, I used visual tools to understand the story. I began to become interested in reading (slightly), I used franchises I liked to read about because of the familiar storylines like: The Hobbit, Twilight, and Percy Jackson.

9th grade - Now

During my high school career — I want to thank my English teachers - Mrs. Hitchcock, Mrs. Leurquin, Mrs. Sporel, and Mrs. Nagel for giving me good book recommendations and getting me more involved with reading. Getting me hooked on a number of books and introducing me to classics, and to discover more. During freshman year, “Tell Me Three Things” and “Flipped” changed my whole perspective on reading. After a few years, I got a kindle and started reading on other media platforms. Pride and Prejudice is currently my favorite model, which I’m reading currently. Which is a lot of progress from my previous years.

Tell Me Three Things - A RomCom book by Julie Buxbaum, which was my first recommended book by Mrs. Hitchcock. This changed reading for me, I finally found a book that I really liked, I walked into class being excited to read it. After finishing the book, I wanted to start reading independently - which was a big step for me at the time. This was the first ever book to make me feel like a “reader”, even though it was a cheesy romantic comedy. The storytelling and characters were so engaging that kept me on my toes the whole time. I am forever grateful for this opportunity to find my favorite book.

I have observed through myself — reading is very important. It gives you inner peace, especially in this modern age with constant noise and distractions. Reading made me enjoy my space and use my creativity to image. It also engaged my mind in an intellectual level without a screen. I try to read as much I can during my free time, when I can it is very enjoyable. I wish that I more free time to read by myself without any distractions. But, it’s also hard for me when there are so many distractions in the world right now. I have an array of different interests with genres, any book could interest me with a very convincing hook or plot.
