Firstly, an infant's psychological development depends on their biological development. This mainly involves cognitive skills through the development of the frontal lobe. In the first years, neurons form new connections and destroy unused ones, eventually leading to individual thinking. This also leads to coming to trust the mother, the environment, and associating surroundings with feelings of inner goodness. Infants also begin to learn object permanence and have an interest in new items rather than ones routinely seen.

In the early childhood stages, the child starts developing motor skills. First they roll over, then sit unsupported, crawl, and walk. They also develop the want to make choices and the self-control to make those choices. This is the earliest age a conscious memory can be developed. Ages 2-3 are where most children also start potty training. Parents should encourage learning new things to build confidence and show that the child can do things and make choices on their own.

A child at 4-5 years old has a sense of self and is aware that they can make choices. They start adding planning and attacking to their choices. At this age, is also when they get more active and on the move. They start exploring their surroundings and becoming more imaginative. A 5 year old also has a longer term memory and starts using more language. As a parent, the first step is encouraging healthy routines to promote initiative, good habits, and make sure your child is active.

At the ages 6-12, children start developing and becoming eagerly absorbed in skills, tasks, productivity, or mastering technology. Logic is applied and they have objective and rational interpretations. Children this age also understand conservation, numbers, ideas, and classifications. Since they also start school at this age, parents are encouraged to help with homework assignments.

At 13-18 years old, adolescents begin connecting skills by thinking abstractly with hypothetical ideas. Social roles are also connected in order to form career objectives. Because of this social interaction is a major event in these ages. Political, moral, and ethical problems are explored and heavily influenced by peers and role models. Parents should encourage their teenagers to explore their identities and plan for the future.
