The 4 C's..The Best Tips, Tricks, and Ideas For Your Classroom by 2dimfilyr Erasmus

The 4 C’s- critical thinking, creativity, communication, collaboration- are essential skills for our students- future citizens. As teachers, we have always tried to teach these skills in class, but we have also been urged to use various online tools in online lessons to further cultivate these skills in our students, but in ourselves as well. What is your attitude- experience on the subject? If you wish, you could also offer ideas, best practices and activities related to the 4C's that you use in your classroom. (Do not forget to write your name, city and country).

As an English teacher in Greek primary schools, I have always tried to arouse students’ interest and motivate them, mostly by making use of the 4C’s. Participation in projects like etwinning and Erasmus have proved to be really effective towards this direction, as students have to collaborate and think critically in creative activities so as to communicate with peers from their own and other countries. Students collaborate, exchange ideas and thoughts, look up for information in various sources and create collaborative projects. Online teaching has also been a source of inspiration for me and my lessons, and students are still carrying out projects organized in a padlet, ebook or a video. I try to get inspired by the topic to be taught and have students work on different activities every time, exploiting videos, songs, educational games and apps close to their age and interests. In most cases, students create wonderful things, feel motivated and self-confident, and without realizing it, they develop the 4 C’s.

Here are two examples of my work with students online- the first one is a video by 3rd graders inspired by a song in their student’s book:

I believe that 4c are important in the pedagogical procedure because they are what our students need,to be creative,to gain critical thinking,to learn to work cooperatively and to communicate with the surroundings. And the best way is etwinning and erasmus projects. With these projects our students are working cooperatively with kids from other countries, they are finding ways to be creative and of cource they are exercising their critical thinking. Here you can see a cooperatively ebook about recycling

Transversal skills are very important to be developed at the appropriate ages and stages of learning so that future citizens and workers can meet European standards to claim a position at home and abroad. Through a different approach to knowledge we achieve the development of skills that tomorrow's citizens will need it.
In the following example, students learn through the game the countries of the Erasmus project.

Project based learning (PBL)

The project is defined as a thorough investigation conducted in order to learn more about a topic than to seek the correct answers to the questions asked by the teacher. Students cooperate over a period of time to solve problems and, finally, present their work to an audience. This final project can be a presentation, a piece, a written report, a web page, etc. I deepened this method by participating in the training course "Student-centered Classroom: teachers as promoters of active learning". In the period of valorization of the experience we have elaborated 2 lesson plans based on this method.

In the 10th grade, I implemented the project entitled "Who was really Napoleon Bonaparte?". For several weeks the students, working at home but also in the classroom under the supervision of the teacher, research various sources about Napoleon Bonaparte, systematize and select useful information to answer the following questions: "Was Napoleon the heir of the Revolution or betrayed by the return to the policies of the Old Regime or was it a combination of old and new? "Did Napoleon act to fulfill the national aspirations of the subject peoples or did he act without regard to national considerations?", "Was Napoleon one of the most great generals in history?", "What leadership lessons can we learn from Napoleon Bonaparte?".

Each group presents the product they made. The teacher evaluates each presentation according to the established criteria that can take into account creativity, critical thinking, collaboration, final presentation of the result, quality of the final tangible result. Each group can evaluate the product made by the other groups. Self-assessment sheets can be used for each student / group.

Project-based learning involves selecting information, processing and synthesizing it, asking questions to guide the investigation, interactions within the group, communicating the results, correlating them, making a final product. I believe that project-based learning contributes primarily to the development of critical thinking because students are in a position to research various sources, to analyze and select different information, to formulate reasoned opinions.

Szent Imre Catholic Primary School
Eger, Hungary

Don't limit your challenges, challenge your limits. :)

It's always interesting to deal with our usual topics in a different way.
This time we worked with religious customs comparing Italy and Hungary. First, some groups were created in which students searched for information on the net in connection with our topic. Next, they shared what they have found (oral presentations). Our goal was to be familiar with the religious and eating habits of these two countries during the period of Easter. Afrer summarising what we got, the details were written down, pictures were printed and a poster was made. As the group's enthusiasm grew more and more recipes were found. Finally, besides our beautiful poster we also had a table full of delicious, hand-made cakes and dishes to try. What a lesson :)
