There were many factors that led to the first Opium War. The most prominent factor had to do with opium. Once China had banned opium, Britain was extremely mad. Without opium, Britain could no longer produce the incredible profit they were making off of China. This led to Britain declaring war in attempt to keep economic domination over China. In addition to that, Britain was also unsatisfied that they had no political control over China. Britain wanted to have at least one British representative in the Chinese imperial court so they could have more political say (trading rights) over China.

The Treaty of Nanjing was on major outcome of the first Opium War. The Treaty of Nanjing actually ended the first Opium War but, unfortunately for China, it was a very unfair treaty. It forced China to create five ports where Britain could trade anything they wanted to with China. Before long, Britain was even able to stop the ban for the selling of opium on mainland China. This showed a small part of Britain's political dominance over China. Even more so, Britain gained control of Hong Kong.

The Chinese government didn't let anyone come near them and only allowed a few ports to be open for foreign trade. This was all due to the fact that China felt superior in its own way. China oved its own culture, religion, and traditions so much that it didn't even open up to the ideas of Westerners.

In the case of the first Opium War, Britain showed imperialism through economical ways.

Opium can debatably be the only cause of the first Opium War. It all started when the Chinese began trading with Britain for opium. Opium is an addictive drug that is now referred to as heroin. Recreational use of opium was considered illegal. Since opium was addictive, the consumption of the drug increased dramatically in China. As this occurred, the profit Britain was making increased too. Not before long, Chinese citizens became addicted to opium and spent all their money on it. This led to China starting to fall apart economically.

If the Chinese government had accepted Western ways while keeping their own culture, China could have modernized rapidly. This could have strengthened not only the Chinese army, but also the Chinese government. Because of this new strength, China may have had a better chance at winning the war. Also, when China decided to stop trading with Britain for Opium, they sent a letter to Queen Victoria explaining why. They told her that it was hurting their economy. China then went on to say that they would be willing to continue to trade with Britain for any item other than opium. Unfortunately, this letter never made it to Queen Victoria. If it had, the British navy may have never been sent to China to declare war.

The old-fashioned Chinese ships were no match for Britain's steel ship navy. In the end, the Opium War was not exactly a very fair war. Britain truly had no major competition in China.

I wanted to research the first Opium War because I wanted to know more about the war itself. I didn't want to see a romanticized version of the war but rather the reality. Because of this, I was intrigued to find out more about the life people experienced during the first Opium War. During my research I felt complete sympathy for China. I was able to see how greatly this war affected them. Britain had used China to be able to make a giant profit. This seemed very interesting to me. I wondered why Britain had chosen China for making an extreme profit off of compared to other countries.. So I continued my research and found even more interesting facts about the Opium War. All these facts made me feel curious, interested, and sympathetic. All in all, my final reaction is that the first Opium War should be taken into account more often. Even though it may have not seem like such a major war, Chinese citizens still feel the lasting effects of the war to this day.
