To Kill a Mockingbird has a serious, reflective tone that mixes with warmth and suspense. Harper Lee tells the story in the first person from the point of view of young Scout Finch, which gives the narrative of an innocent and sometimes hilarious tone. But as the book explores into serious topics like racism, injustice, and moral development, the tone can shifts to one of somber reflection and biting social criticism.

While Scout looks back on her youth with a great sense of nostalgia, the harsh realities she and her brother Jem must face as they grow provide contrast. Also, the tone exudes a moral gravity, particularly in the way it tackles questions of right and wrong as well as the need of empathy and understanding in a society full of prejudice and ignorance.
