"The wooden shutters on the windows of our little house of baked bricks had been removed, and the light from oi lamps inside made bright squares on the ground."

This is the house Buran grew up in and has never been out of in her life. This is significant to the plot because in her small town, she knows everyone and feels very safe and at ease. This makes her journey only more difficult as she has to leave the place she knows and navigate the real world by herself.

“When I left the caravansary, I made my way through city streets to the widest gate in the city wall. I walked swiftly across a flat plain and then turned and headed toward the sea.”

This quote appears in the book when Buran first arrives in Tyre and goes to the beach to bathe. This shows that Tyre is a busy city thats right near the sea. This could help the reader infer that the sea will be mentioned a lot as it seems to be one of the main parts of the town.

"I stood on the deck, wrapped in a long aba, a cloak, my hands holding onto the railing, my veil blowing in the breeze. I watched the expanse of sea between the boat and the shore grow wider and wider. pg 156"

This is the boat Buran leaves Tyre on, leaving the town and people she loves behind. She takes the boat she takes to Alexandria which is where she finds her cousin, Hassan. This is important to the plot because as shes leaving she realizes how much loves and misses Mahmud.

“Night after night Nasir and I walked next to the water, enveloped by the warm black night. The only sounds that reached us were the wavelets slapping gently against the sides of the boats lying at anchor in the harbor and the creaking of their planks and rigging.” This quote provides a clear example of how peaceful Nasir and Mahmud walks were. This is important to the story because Nasir and Mahmud's walks really strengthened their relationship.

“We entered the bathhouse and disrobed. Over our bodies we poured the heated water that flowed into stone basins flush with tiled floors. Then we cover ourselves and lay down on pallets to gossip and joke while the sweat rolled off of us.” This quote is important to the plot because it provides a clear vision of what the bathhouse would look like. Another reason of why this quote is important to the plot is because a lot of important details in the story happen in the bathhouse.
