Southern Italy was comparatively more rural and poor, having an agricultural-based economy.

The Roman Empire was a powerful civilization that spanned from 27 BCE to 476 CE. Beginning as a republic, it transitioned into an empire under Augustus Caesar. The empire expanded through military conquests, reaching its height of territorial control across Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East. It experienced periods of prosperity and cultural achievement during the Pax Romana but also faced challenges such as political instability, invasions, and economic decline. The empire eventually split into the Western Roman Empire, which fell in 476 CE, and the Eastern Roman Empire (Byzantine Empire), which endured for centuries. The Roman Empire left a lasting legacy in law, architecture, language, and culture.

Benito Mussolini was heavily influenced by the Roman Empire. Drawing inspiration from ancient Rome, Mussolini sought to establish a fascist regime and viewed himself as a modern-day Roman leader. He utilized Roman symbolism and imagery, adopting the title "Il Duce" and incorporating the fasces emblem into the Fascist Party's symbolism. Mussolini aimed to revive Italy's greatness, emulating the centralized power and authoritarian rule of ancient Roman emperors. He pursued public works projects, sought territorial expansion, and envisioned a new Roman Empire under fascist control. The influence of the Roman Empire on Mussolini's ideology and aspirations played a significant role in shaping his leadership and policies.
