Padlet 1 mass media
Define
1. Mass
The word mass in mass media could be defined as the technology involved to communicate to large mass audiences (Brown, 2014).
2. Media
Media in Mass media could be defined as describing the different means of communication (Haralambos et al.,2009).
There are plenty definitions for Media in the word pass media, it is the form of communication used to communicate ideas to an audience. Forms of communication used are cable, satellite television, radio, newspapers, magazines, websites, books, films, CDs, DVDs
, advertising, computer games, the internet, mp3 players and mobile smart phones (Brown,2014).
b) What is Mass media?
According to Moore, Aiken, and Chapman (2009), the mass media are generally defined as those agencies of communication that transmit information, news, entertainment and education to the mass audiences. The mass media is where a message is conveyed from the one point to many other points (Holborn and Langley, 2005).
c) Who owns the mass media?
The ownership of the main mass media in modern Britain is concentrated in the hands of
a few large companies, which are interested in making profits (Brown, 2014). One individual Rupert Murdoch, is the major force behind international news, he owns the sun and the Times newspaper which makes up 33% of all the national daily newspaper sales in the UK (Brown, 2014). According to Giddens, Sutton, and Ivonne (2013), the most influential media companies in January 2000 joined together in what was the largest corporate merger the world had ever seen. It was between Tim Warner the owner of the biggest media company and also AOL, the largest internet service provider (Giddens, Sutton, and Ivonne,2013). The merge between the two companies brought 120 million magazine readers, 24 million AOL subscribers and television channels CNN, HBO, Warner Brothers, all under one huge corporate roof (Giddens, Sutton, and Ivonne,2013). Brown (2014), states that it is the owners of the media companies who influence the content of their output, and this may or may not occur in a direct way. The views and priorities of the owner is more than likely to be known to the journalists who seeks to please their bosses (Browne, 2014). Browne (2014), also states that news may become distorted to meet audiences needs.
d) What is one-to-one communication?
One-to-one communication could be described as when messages are conveyed between single points, an example of this could be text message between two individuals (Holborn and Langley,2005). According to Browne (2014) one-to-one communications is more targeted and can even be customer initiated. As a result of this form of communication it could be classed as being more relevant to the customer and has more likelihood of being read and acted upon by the recipient (Browne,2014).

e) What is one-to -many communication?
One-to-many communication is where one person is entitled to be the sender to a number of individuals (Brown, 2014). According to Giddens, Sutton, and Ivonne,(2013), one-to-many communication is the traditional advertising model, this is where marketers give a promotional one directional message to their readers/listeners. It is difficult to know if the audience actually receives the message as it is one directional (Brown,2014).

f) Is there a different type of communication?
Another type of communication is many-to-many, this is where a group of people share information together, each participant person can send a message and everyone can receive the message (Browne, 2014). An example of this would be a Facebook group conversations where everyone in the group is free to send a message and everyone in the group can see the message. Many-to-many is a new form of communication that has grown overtime, it has done this due to an increased use of social media network, which has enabled users to have conversations with large audiences (Brown,2014). Many-to-many can be used as a way of marketing goods, marketers can effectively engage with customers, whilst gathering input about the product they are offering (Brown,2014).
