From my question, I am thinking that I want to look into. So I decided to create a mindmap of potential ideas.

My Initial Idea

- I like the idea of looking into society and how children's television shows have shaped their learning and understanding of the world.
- I also like the idea of looking at the individual messages in TV children programme, like friendship or how to share. I kinda like the idea of social commentary.

I need to choose.

Individual message - I wanted to create multiple of something, like a collection of books or zines. Something that is all similar to one another but looks good together as one.
- I like the idea of screen printing.
- book binding?
Society idea - creating books?
Which ever way I go, it has to look finish and be realistic as to what I can finish.
Books - have a lot of pages,
Zines - smaller, less intense
- maybe create a board book as my target audience is children. I want to create around 4/5 books to put them together to create a library of some sort.
- considering around 8 pages per book. Mainly illustration with a few words, kind of linking to social commentary a little bit.
- maybe put the books inside a box as I have seen in library and book shops. Like a container.

Both ideas are about books but I have decided that I want to create the individual books but for the educational messages/ theme. I like the idea of educating kids as it also linked with the idea of social emotional learning like children television shows.

When you first think about education, you automatically think about books so I think this is a good way to showcase an educational message.

Rules for Photography

Hard light - I want something more 3D, more shadows
reflector spreads the light about, when placed under, it captures the light from above to brighten the thing placed above it.
Consider DPI - aim for 300 to make sure it's a rich image, that's the best for printing.
aim for neutral balance - photoshop alter colour balance (command key + b) all numbers should be 0, mid tones and preserve luminosity. In photoshop, go onto levels, there's a graph that represent data of highlights and shadow, the empty par means you get away with it if you toggle it anywhere making it high contrast and crisp.

For this workshop, we were told about lighting rules about exposure and aperture and photography rules. After we got to create something out of clay to practice our photography.
For my project, because my minor is about bunnies, so I created a blue bunny to resemble the night sky and added it on a piece of grass. When taking the photo, I included a lot of empty space, making the bunny look quite small and alone. Making both a quiet and sad vibe; a dwarfing effect, playing to scale because of white space.
With the background, if you make the sheet curved, it makes a less sharp background as it could distract from the focus.
There's a thing where I can play with shadow, like the silhouette can be a bunny or duck.

My rough triptychs, communicating the stage of life.

The first image is of a baby and their parent is rocking them to sleep, the second image is someone drowning themselves into work, very focused on life and the last image is an empty rocking chair. The fact that no one in that image is suggesting that they are no longer there and there’s no children as they were to focus on work and didn’t have time to socialise. The windows are consistent throughout all the images.

This is a piece of artwork from someone at UAL at the exhibition I saw. The reason I took a photo was they created a triptych with having three photo that connect with one another.
The layout reminds me of when pieces of paper are placed next to one another which also makes me think of an accordien book.

What is my idea currently?

I am thinking about they type of book I want to create and I am considering the technique of screen printing the story board and either create a collection of board books or a zine collection, like a library.
For the screen printing process, I am deciding between mixing different colours, as my audience is children, or choosing one colour palette per book.

- maybe stick to primary colours

- screen printing, consider maybe 3 colours as I don't want my colours to over bleed with one another.

- considerer making the book one colour but with different shades. And when placed together, they are in the order of a rainbow (red, orange, yellow, green, blue)

-the colours I like to use is yellow, blue, pink

Children book research

- A lot of children's book tend to have the characters as animals as it creates emotional distance when a topic is more deep and painful to show.

- Children tend to relate with characters that represent them, so like if a character looks like them, they will be more invested to see what happens.

-Board books tend to have one panel per page but I am considering creating a story/comic within the book.

I want to make two characters, but when choosing my characters, I want them to have very different characteristics to show they are putting their natural instincts away and interacting together. (bunny and lion)

Something I noticed is that when drawing these facial features, the emotions are in the eyes. I kept the base the same and mouth and added a few elements to portray these feelings.

When looking at books, something I have noticed is that in children's books, its kind of like making a list. With having one note at the top and an image illustrating it. This is something I want to do, create a simple book with tips and tricks teaching children about society.

Something I have noticed when trying to stick the front and back together was I needed to leave a gap in between the boards as I was unable to fold them when they were right next to each other.

I needed a better way to cover up the tape marks and holes to create a nice book.

Something I noticed was the cut line in between the pages which is okay, but it showed the tape underneath so maybe when I create the proper thing, I make it so that I can glue my page on top then create a crease line so that the middle part gets covered too.
