We all know many different versions about what spirits are and are not. 

So I ask, if there's anything real involved when people talk about spirits, what is it?

When I ask that question about something, I look for what everyone seems to agree on about that thing. Then I start by assuming everyone is right about that agreed core of information about it.

Then I start experimenting and reviewing our experiences.

What I've found when people think of "spirits", they're talking about things that *in our consciousness* affect our intentions, motivations, and directions of purpose. I keep trying to refine that list, but it's been those 3 for a while now. Then I heard "clusters of sentiments" and thought it's a good visual for it, because intention, motivation, and direction of purpose are *all* about sentiment. Reason is what we use to act on those sentiments.

This puts "spirits" in useful touch for just about anybody who isn't so stuck on their story they can't look at what's actually there unless you buy their narrative ahead of time. It's an understanding I think we can use to talk about the whole range of spiritual, paranormal, and other experiences. 

It also directs attention away from the less interesting 'really real' questions and onto the significance of phenomena *given that something is really going on*. 

Even if we're not sure what a happening *is*, we always know something about what it *means* to us. 

So let's start there! 😄
