Instead they were ruled by Britain in a way that you could interpret as a "dictatorship", but really it wasn't. How did it come to this? The Ottoman Empire ruled Palestine from 1517 all the way until WWI. During the great war the Ottoman Empire lost to Britain and the land was distributed between France and Britain, and that's how the British got hold of Palestine. So instead of one dictator ruling it was one country. They governed the area from 1920 to 1948. The Arab population though that lived there claimed that they had been promised the land for helping in the war but the Jews claimed they had been promised the land as well. Both sides believed they had a right to the land which resulted in conflict. This is where the British come in. To restore law they sent their military to put an end to it forcefully, once that  failed they decided they put a quota on the number of Jews who could enter Palestine in any one year. Both sides were still upset and pushed to gain control of the land. Britain, realizing they could do nothing to rule Palestine, looked for a way out. The newly formed United Nations accepted the idea to partition Palestine into a zone for the Jews (Israel) and a zone for the Arabs (Palestine). That is why the government became so authoritarian.
