GLOBAL CLASS VISIT: An inspiration, an affirmation

I have always wondered how classes in other countries are facilitated. I believe that being able to sit in these classes is a very good benchmark to improve on my craft as an educator. This what made me attracted to GLOBAL GUESTS 2022.

I got the opportunity to visit a class facilitated in Cantonese and another in Spanish. One class started with discussing current events. The presentation of student's assignment followed after. Meanwhile, the other class started by students presenting their project then the lecture of the instructor. Both are very similar to what I have been doing. Students were engaged in all the classes that I have visited and this is what I always strive to achieve in my class as well.

While I expected that classes abroad have their students turn on their cameras during the entire session, I realized that this is not the case. Just like my class, not all students would turn on their cameras for some reasons. However, we know that the students are around because we call either of them to participate. I observed this, too in the classes that I have visited.

As for the instructors, Ms. Iris and Ms. Carla, I find their teaching personality very inspiring. They are pleasant and never threatening. I believe that while educators need to be technically prepared to facilitate learning, personality is equally important as well because it becomes a source of motivation for students.

My journey in this GLOBAL CLASS has been worthwhile. It was an affirmation, an inspiration.

Aleli A.

It is amazing to see how other teachers around the world work. I did not have any expectations because I wanted to learn everything there. It really surprised me that even there are diferent topics to teach, each teacher deal with similar things as other teachers. But even dough, the Cameras are off and the same people participating, the teachers are still passionate and marvelous!
Nerla Silva
USP UDEM
San Pedro Garza García, NL.
A Great Experience in the Philippines and Mexico

I had the privilege of visiting Aleli's Saavedra's classroom at San Pedro College in the Philippines one evening/morning in April. It was fascinating to see how much her class format resembled mine. One of the only major differences was the rooster that crowed in the distance every now and then.

Later that month, I visited Carla Elizonda's class at the University of Monterrey (UDEM) in Mexico. Her students were kind enough to turn on their cameras for presentations that day, and while I don't Spanish (only Italian), I was delighted to watch them present.

Carla visited my honors Intro to Sociology course at UT Dallas, and while the course was being taught in-person this semester, she was able to join in through Zoom. My students presented on social policy issues related to non-binary genders, and we realized that we have different approaches to discussing these types of topics in Mexico and the United States.

All in all, it was a wonderful experience, and I feel like I have made two new friends. I definitely will be traveling to Monterrey one day soon and hope to make it to the Philippines in the not to distant future.

I am grateful for the Global Guests opportunity.

Carol Cirulli Lanham
University of Texas at Dallas
United States
