Chinese opera as the essence of Chinese traditional culture, contains rich cultural heritage and artistic content. Chinese opera has many strong female roles, for most of its history. There are over 1200 stories in Chinese opera, mostly drawn from historical legend and mythology. Many promote traditional Chinese values like respect for parents, female modesty and obedience to authority, while more than half stories encourage women resistance to injustice or show women in unusually strong roles.
