The original Latin name of the town was Ausa.
During the 8th and 9th centuries, Vic was part of the marks that separated the Frankish forces from the Islamic ones. The city was destroyed in 788 during a Muslim raid. Later, only one of the neighborhoods (Vicus, Latin district) would be rebuilt, with the name Vicus Ausonensis. The Tannery quarter is one of the most emblematic of the city of Vic, both for its historical character, for the tannery tradition of the city and for the trades related to the leather. This neighborhood is located along of the River Mèder, near the medieval walls and the Queralt Bridge.

The Plaça Major is Vic’s main square and the hub of much of the town’s activity. The square is bordered by arcades that give access to the numerous shops, cafés and restaurants that are located on the square. There are some beautiful buildings.
