I would like to be in an urban setting. I did a practicum in a third grade classroom, and I absolutely loved it. There are more challenges it seems, but at the same time the students seem to gain so much from school and are so excited to be there. However, I won’t be picky with a first job, and I will be excited to gain experience in a variety of settings.
-AS

I do not have a preference when it comes to the type of school I would like to teach in because I feel as though I could learn from a variety of school settings. I would like to work for a progressive school district in which schools are interested in change and moving forward rather than the "this is how we have always done it..." That kind of thinking can be off-putting for new teachers and young families.

-BS

I sort of have an idea of what my preference is to where I want to teach. I do think it would be very beneficial to start out in an urban school district as I have heard many great things. I have never truly witnessed schools in urban settings so the thought of this at first did make me a little nervous. Now that I have heard many encouraging stories, great learning experiences, and the educational benefits of starting in this setting I think I would love teaching in an urban setting. With that all being said, I would not mind teaching in suburban settings either. It is something that I definitely have more experience with but it is not my first pick for the next few years. I have also heard great things about teaching in rural settings as well because they often times have a tough time getting teachers so they offer better pay or pay off student loans. I do not think I would turn down any position just because of its location but there definitely does seem to be benefits working in all different settings.
-GR

I think that I would like to teach in either a suburban or an urban school district. I think that I would like to teach more in a suburban area because I feel like that might be where my teaching style would fit in more, however, I think that it would be beneficial to teach in an urban school district as well. I think that teaching in an urban school district would help to teach me a lot of different things, and those students are some of the students who need a positive role model in their lives the most. I would really like to be someone that my students feel comfortable talking to and someone that my students look up to, and I think that would best be achieved in an urban area. My mom has worked in Urban school districts since she got her license and she absolutely loves it. I have also spent a lot of time working up at my mom's school and helping her in her classroom and I enjoy it as well. I just worry that it would be too stressful, especially in my first few years teaching. So I might start in more of a suburban area at the beginning of my career and if I'm feeling like I'm not getting enough out of my career, or I just want a change of setting, I would probably move to an urban area.
-AB

I think I would prefer teaching in a rural or suburban area. In a suburban area I think a lot more resources and services would be available and being a special ed. teacher, I think that would be really helpful. I think it would also be a good experience to teach in a rural community because I might be able to bring in a new perspective and I might be able to provide a lot more help in a community like that.

I would like to teach in a suburban area. I feel like this area might have more resources available as well as more parent involvement. Suburban areas will have a wide range of children with a wide range of abilities which will be a great learning experience for me. I also feel I have a lot to offer a school in that type of area.

I don't mind everyone knowing me. I also believe teachers have an opportunity to create a closer bond with parents and family members. They may have had past siblings and relatives in their class. The whole community is tightly knitted and well aware of everyones concerns and accomplishments.

-MGB

I would be open to teaching in any of these school settings as I think that they all would have many unique, valuable, experiences to offer. Although, specifically, I have a lot of interest in an urban setting. I grew up in suburban schools, and I feel as though I would like to experience something different. Additionally, there is a lack of high-quality teachers, and even teachers in general, willing to teach in urban areas due to the increased hardships that come along with teaching in these settings. Many students in these areas come from low SES homes, which can often cause several struggles for them such as lack of health/nutrition, stability, exposure, resources, support etc. These hardships the students might face can result in low academic achievement and behavioral problems, making this a more challenging group to teach. I believe now more than ever we need our best teachers in these areas that would fight to close the achievement gap. I am passionate in equal education and opportunity for all, therefore I feel called to pursue teaching in an urban area.
-RW

Honestly, I wouldn’t mind working in any of these settings. It would be nice to be paid a decent salary, and those are more often found in the suburban areas, but, also, urban and rural eras really need highly educated and qualified teachers. A lot of the time, the teachers are overworked and underpaid in these areas, and that can lead to burn out as well as resentment. They need teachers that are going to be there for them no matter what classroom disruptions arise, or what amount they are making. I’ve been to over 10 different schools. One of them was blue valley west, but another one was a rural school, where I graduated with 18 other students. There were two good teachers there, in the rural school, but most of them were bunt out (at least in the high school side) and didn’t handle classroom management well. On the other hand, there were only a few teachers, in BVW that seemed burnt out, but most of them were really engaged in the subject. I don’t think that that is a coincidence. This question is always hard for me to answer, because my main focus is to create a safe and equitable environment for my students.

-BH
