That war can leave one damaged in more ways than physical and that ones mental state can be helped or healed in unexpected ways. It does not seem like Esmé sent her package expecting for Sargent Xs faculties to be so damaged but by doing so she is able to inadvertently help him on the path to recovery, seemingly more so than the hospital he checked himself into.

Gus Beech

I think the theme is that hope anchors you no matter what you go through. Esme was a bit of happiness to the narrorator in a difficult time, both before and after the war. Even when the narrorator is dealing with trauma at the end of the story, he finds peace in Esme's letter.

I feel like the theme has to do with either human vs self or human vs human because Salinger before the war was a writer and was able to keep a steady hand but the part that we read in class we can see that PTSD has affected J.d Salinger by making his handwriting illegible from all the trauma but nobody else will understand what he has been through.

Like his post in Devon, the soldiers only talk to each other when they want something. The mother-in-law asks him for some cashmere yarn. Clay wants X to make his letters more interesting. X's brother asks for some swastikas. only in the end is when he receives the watch from Esme.

I think the theme of “For Esmê - with love and squalor” is about the impact of the war and recovery. The war resulted the main character to suffered from the PTSD, and for his recovery, he decided to fulfill Esmê’s promise. The promise was made before he experienced his trauma, and when he was thinking about the time he was okay in mentally while writing the letter, it actually helped him to sleep.
-Somee-
