She went through many tests until they finally found out that she had PKU. They started to follow the PKU diet as soon as they could and she seemed to slowly start to recover. There are four levels of PKU. The reason why the body can't break down phenylalanine is because of a mutation in an enzyme called PAH or phenylalanine hydroxylase. There are many physical, intellectual, and neurological problems that occur if it's not treated. There is no cure for PKU, but it is a treatable disorder. There are specific diets that those who have PKU must follow throughout the entirety of their lives in order to lead a normal life.
