During this stage from 0-18 months, a child's trust is learned through their caregiver. Feeding, changing, comforting and attending to the needs of a baby help the baby to form trust or mistrust depending on the treatment of the caregiver. My daughter learned how to trust me because I attended to all of her needs and fed, bathed, changed her diaper, played with her, held her and showed her much love.

This stage begins at 18 months and extends through the age of 3 years old. This is the age of exploring autonomy, being more independent and trying and exploring new tasks . Usually walking is perfected and potty training is accomplished or started at this stage. Feeding ourselves is also began as we learn new fine motor skills. We are also learning the power of emotion and conscience with shame and doubt if we are made to feel like we can't do something.
My daughter struggled with potty training at this age and could pee in the potty but not poo. We continued to work with her until she finally accomplished her goal, she had such a sense of independence when she accomplished this.

During this stage we like to imitate what adults are doing and initiating new friendships and experiences. Making up stories and pretend play are a hallmark of this stage. We are learning all kinds of new things through play. Guilt of not being able to perform like others, or doing the wrong thing become prevalent during this stage. My daughter had to be in speech, physical and occupational therapy due to being premature. She persevered, although she struggled. She had trouble with fine motor skills, saying her sounds and tight muscles. Although her sibling could do things she couldn't she would keep trying.

During this stage our peer group expands and changes a lot. We have alot of people in our lives now from teachers to school bus drivers and classmates. We start to learn what we are good at and develop a sense of pride and industry as we become more confident in the things we can do. But when we find out that we may not be as good at some things as others it can cause a sense of inferiority, so we can be helpful by helping the child find things they excel in so they can find their sense of industry. My daughter found that she was very good at drawing and would draw pictures for everyone that she could. When she would see the smiles and hugs for the pictures she drew it encouraged her to draw more.

Just who am I. That is a classic experience that we try to identify in this stage of development. As peer groups tend to narrow and we have a distinct "group" of friends, we often try to figure out just where we belong in society, in school and in life general. As we grow closer to the end of this age we have more decisions on what we want to be, what career path do we take and what comes next after high school. It leads to alot of questions that we try and struggle to have the answers to. My daughter is not to this age yet, but she has already told me that she wants to grow up and be a missionary and build orphanages. She often speaks of how she will raise money to accomplish this to rescue children.

Relationships are now being formed outside of our family more often. Close/intimate relationships with friend and those of the opposite sex are now starting to be more prevalent. We have to choose to develop these relationships or to not trust and stay more isolated without having the ability to trust it will lead to isolation. I would estimate that my daughter would most likely marry, and have a family as she speaks of this often even now. She is a very trusting person, so I would have close relationships with others easily.

We often view our worth on what we have done in life that will outlast us. What have we contributed to help others that when we die that we will be remembered for. Stagnation could be when we are not doing much but becoming more isolated and don't feel like we are contributing much to the world around us or not feeling as worthy. Depending on what path she would take in life, if she follows her dreams of being a missionary, she won't feel the stagnation part of this, as there is no retirement from ministry work. Working at your lifelong dream will be fulfilling.

The last and final stage of this life. This is the time of life of reflection. What did we accomplish in life and did we do all that we wanted to do and get done in life. If we can look back on life and feel good about what we have done with our time here, or what we have accomplished we will feel satisfied and integral. If we look back and feel like we didn't use our time wisely, and have regrets about how we lived our lives and accomplishments then we will fall into bitterness and despair. If my daughter fulfills her dreams of marriage and being a mother as well as being a missionary she will indeed look back with integrity and without despair.
