When students get stuck on narrowing a topic, they can use tools like ChatGPT to quickly generate a list of possible topics around a broad interest which they can then use as a starting point to investigate more specific aspects related to the topic of interest.

Scaffolding Boolean Searching

Once students have a topic, thinking of related keywords and correctly formatting those terms into Boolean searches can present a difficult hurdle to overcome. Tools like ChatGPT can be used by students to generate ideas for formatting their search for materials. I tested this by asking ChatGPT to generate a Boolean search based on the topic "The Use of Drones in Agriculture" and it did it pretty good job. Used in this way, AI can help students get past one of the barriers to effective searching but it also provides them with an opportunity to slowly build their skills in developing effective search strings because it allows them to see the relationship between the topic stated in plain language and how that topic needs to be reformatted in order to become an effective search string.
