And what they did to get to the west and the struggles they had faced for example Indians, steep snowy mountains, and Buffalo. how they got there would be by trains, boats or by wheeled cabins, also what there did to get west would be kick out or kill both Indians and buffalo.

2: the mood is is both happens/sadness because we are latterly creating the future but we are also killing and shooing Indians and Buffalo away. also you can see that there are two sides a dark side and a light side on the dark side there are snowy mountains what settlers had to face on there gurney there are also buffalo being chased away and Indians are also being cased away and on the light side there is an angle thing white people cabins trains and boats and power lines are being placed .

3: foreground: hills and plains, white people with horses nice cloths cabins they also a stage coach and a wheeled cabin then you also see scared hopeless Indians with only a couple horses and like a spear to protect them. background :steep snowy mountains trains, a city and boats.

4:

5: ovessly Indians because we kicked them out of there land and didn't Evan make a deal with them like we did to buy the land we acted like they were aliens/a different spisees. and also war because we had to go to war to diceied who got the land.

1. It relates because the settlers where moving in the Westward Expansion and the goddess where pushing them off. The carriages represent the white settlers moving into the land.
2. The mood and tone is kinda upset and dark on one side because the Native Americans are there, goddess is pushing the settlers and the Native Americans off the land. then the other side is all bright and has trains and boats. When the other side has bulls and horses.
5. The problems probably where lots of fighting back and laws changed because the Native Americans didn't want to lose their land also when the settlers where traveling there could other problems like diseases, Cholera from drinking salty water etc. There could also be threats from thefts and wild animals or the weather changing. The thefts could steal all of your food, then you will starve to death! You could get into with a bear and become food for it. Weather could change into snowing and you could die from freezing to death!

1. It relates because it shows the meaning of what were doing in the westward expansion, the Americans traveling west as we are pushing Indians off their land to make it ours. For example, on one side you see the Americans coming to the new land, and the Indians are coming off of it. It is almost like a still simulation of what really happened, and it kind of shows the problem of getting rid of Indians.
Hi Kylie!
Would you explain more about what you mean? Thanks! Mrs. Holliday
Ok Mrs. Holliday!

2. It gives a mood of unfairness because of the Americans pushing of the Indians and everything the had off their land. For example, if you look to the bottom middle to left on American Progress, it shows many Indians and buffalo being forced to leave their land. On the other side, it is giving a mood of new beginnings because of all the land and other things given by moving west. If you look to the bottom middle to the right, it is Americans that have traveled across the country that have finally made it to the place they have been wanting for 6-9 months

5. Problems that had commonly occurred were diseases such as typhoid, measles, cholera, etc; Also, there were many different animals that were a threat to the people moving, like bears, mountain lions, etc; Other problems could possibly be a problem with the wagon, and not enough food and/or water.

Because the Native americans are getting pushed off their land by the angle it looks like and the Americans pushed the Indians off their lands. The Americans are getting what they wanted. The angel is bringing light into the Westward Expansion!
4: I want to know why power lines are being brought in. Also why one side is dark and the other side is light. Is the book that she is holding a bible is the angel a symbol of ? Is it symbolizing the Americans pushing the Native Americans off their lands ?

5: Building was happening. Arguing not agreeing with people. Then if people did not agree maybe they would get into a fight.

2. The mood gives a sense of grief in the bottom left, where Indians are getting pushed off their land, bison are being pushed out of the area, and there is a tone of sadness because of the blackened gray clouds. However, in the right side, you can see sunlight and bright clouds. There are ships in the bay, and multiple different train tracks and train cars. There are horses pulling carriages and an angel stringing power lines, and wood and rope in her hand. You can also see some small houses already build and in the process.

3. In the foreground, you can see lots of white people in fancy clothes, riding horses or walking around. There is wildlife, as you can see a deer scampering off (away from humans) and two bison, most likely in captivity. Also there are a bunch of horses. There is a god/angel with wood and rope, stringing electrical lines, probably to help the new invention of harnessing electricity and light bulbs. Indians who are getting pushed away by horses and wagons, look like they are trying to fight back but are unsuccessful.
In the background (left side), there are dark clouds, which gives it a sense of sadness. I think I see some small but challenging mountains. Some bison are getting pushed off of view, by a man on a horse, probably equipped with a weapon(s). On the left background there are trains chugging along, although it looks like the train tracks end behind the angel. There are ships in a bay, and near that I think I can see a very faint bridge, maybe even the famous Golden Gate Bridge, which was built in 1937, and this was 1872, so it was very possible. There is a bright yellow light coming from that end, and there are bright clouds.

5. I think one of the problems that could've arisen was wars, because they thought they had the right to take the land west of the Mississippi River, some people actually owned some of that land (i.e. Mexico owned current-day Texas, which resulted in the Mexican-American War). Another problem that may have arisen could be protests.

1: This image relates to the Westward Expansion because it shows the people of the frontier expanding west in search of a better life. In the bottom right of the image you see a group of settlers leading oxen on a trail near the forest. Behind them is what looks to be a small, somewhat hastily made cabin. Not only does this express the time that this image is depicting, it also sets the mood.

2: The mood of the painting is melancholy, even though there is the angel in the foreground. The painting clearly shows that this moment in our history was something we shouldn't be that proud of. In the left corner of the painting you see Native Americans
being pushed out of their land by the white settlers. One of the Indians is looking back at the angel, his expression aghast. Not only does this feel unfair, this aspect of the painting influences the mood.
The ideas discussed above are related to my thinking on Question 5.

5: A debate this painting may have started is how we treated others.
The racial divide in our constitution leads back to the time of the westward expansion, perhaps even further. The exposition of this suggests that while we held Indian captives during the Native American v. United States of America, the captives struggled to survive in the inhumane conditions that we provided for them and most eventually died.
My theory is the latter : We assumed that because the Native Americans did not look like us or speak like us, they had no civil rights and didn't deserve to be treated like any white person. I define this as a racial stereotype, and we should be ashamed that we would even think like this. This repeated throughout our history. ( Ex. Civil Rights Movement - Segregation)

And of course, one of the main questions of this time period: Was our conquest of the land west of the Mississippi River and our reasons for doing so unjust? Did they abide by our Constitution and its laws? And did they feel just in our opinion? My answer on this topic would be a solemn no. ( For further explanation, please read the above, in case you have any questions about this paragraph or answer.)

1: this relates to westword expansion, because there are people moving. also there are many difrent people moving, indians, farmers, hunters, and people are moving for many diffrent reasons, hunters, some people are also moving for gold. This also relates to westword expansion because it shows all the diffrent people that have and was moving to the west.

2: The tone of the picture, is sad and glumey for the people that have to move, and that because they had to get of there land rather then getting land( they were forced to get pushed off there land and move. ) It was hard for the people to move but as we heard they found more gold then ever they also had more resources to build bigger land witch grew the populasion. But it still was not right of us to do that.and it shows that in the picture it was dark and cloudy, also lots of mountains. but on the other side it was full of land and light, and wonderful clouds. This side was the proud and joyful side. It looks like the right side has more progress, and has a lot more electricity. Do you think it was fair to send the other people of there land to another place? Think if we did not do that we would not have been hear today.

5:

Also on the foreground are nice white colored dressed nice settlers. And in the back round are Indians getting pushed out of the land so all the nice bright things can come in, that was very important for the westward expansion.

4. I want to know more about the Indians and why they got pushed out of the towns field.
5. Maybe some of the conflicts were fights over the land and who gets it. Also another problem that occurred is arguments between the settlers and that Indians.

1. I think that this image relates to Westward Expansion, because it shows settlers traveling left, (to the west.) Another way I think this relates to the Westward Expansion is because they are taking over the land which relates to question five, because one of the upcoming problems was that they were going to take over the land, no matter what, and it is showing it in this picture, with the Indians and the bulls running off their own territory.

4. One thing that I want to learn more about Manifest Destiny is how did they take over all the land with all the Native Americans and animals and how did they get the animals off the land, because if they were coming from the east and heading west, the animals would be going to the left. So did they kill the animals or did they only ove the Indians to a reserve?
Another question that I have is, how did the Americans get the Indians off the land, did they negotiate, or did they fight?

5. I think one occouring problem is that they are not treating the Indians and the bulls right because they had a mission to take over any land no matter what, I think they did their job, but they should have treated he other people who were on that land more farily. Another problem that I think arisen was all the fights/arguments they got in, because the Indians did not want to leave their land that they have settled, and the Americans were trying to get the Indians off "their land."

2. I think the tone/ mood is sad for the Indians and exitment for the Americans. I think that because the Indians are getting pushed away, while the Americans are holding their position and still being determined.

3. I think the foreground, is the angel guiding the Americans. (Not finished.)

The mood in the picture feels unfair, and depressing because on the left side of the picture, white settlers are kicking out the Native Americans and the buffalo from their home. On the right side of the picture, it feels unfair and depressing because the settlers are ruining the beauty of nature, by putting trains and power lines. Also, the clouds help with making the mood depressing, because in books, when there are clouds, something bad happens, or is going to happen.

3. The foreground shows white settlers, Native Americans being kicked out, the angel bringing in a train and power line, and in the background, there are clouds, mountains, plains, a train, and a river.

5. Some problems that happened because Americans expanded west of the Mississippi River were that the Native Americans got pushed off of their land, which probably made them mad, and while expanding, many people died, for example, from diseases like cholera, or starvation, or bad weather, or their wagon could have broken and the settlers would be stuck.

There is also farmers homesteading.

2. Half of the mood is happy because the weather looks sunny, there is a town, a river (might be the Erie canal, which is much safer, and faster than wagon), there are boats and mountains. It also looks like there are a lot of houses to live in. The other half is dark and stormy, which shows that it's not a happy mood, because Indians are being pushed off their lands.

5. On the road they could have got diseases, the wagons wooden tires could have gotten broken, or bad weather happened.

1. I think the painting "Manifest Destiny" related to Westward Expansion because it is showing how America has progressed because of Westward Expansion it is showing that because the angel is pushing away all the things that during Westward Expansion we tried to take away such as Native Americans. It is showing things that because of the Westward Expansion the West now had, like more people, trains and railroads such as the Transcontinental Railroad which was used to transport goods and people to the West. It is showing telegraph lines which could operate through the West because there where more people living there because more people got hooked on the traveling west or manifest destiny. There is also a port that was started because more people decided to travel west by boat. And that is how I think the painting "Manifest Destiny" relates to the Westward Expansion.

4.) I want to know more about how the settlers "banished" Native Americans I know that the trail of tears possibly relates to that, but how because of the Americans progress moving out West did we make the native Americans walk to new places that they could live in or where we nice to them and took them by wagon to wherever we where taking them? Another question I have is how did we eradicate the animals? I ask this because in "American Progress" It shows the angel showing buffalo away. But how did the pioneers end up getting the buffalo away?

5.) I think that A problem that may have started because of Manifest Destiny is the treatment of other races that are not white. Because of the Americans moving out West Native Americans had to move off the land that they had settled and lived on for many years, During the gold rush the Americans exploited or overworked Mexicans, and we treated the Asians horribly.

It grew about 20,000,000 people. this connects to the quote because he says, " free develepment of our multiplying millions."
the picures show that some people moved to the midwest, they probley moved there so they could get resources to build a bigger city/land. But in the west there were less settlers but as the other people found out about the resorces and the gold ther population might of grown.
Contrast:
They are diffrent because the Northeast on the map(page 37) is more land then the Northeast on the other map (page 48). On the page 37 they have not descoverd the West and the Midwest, but when they did descover that land the population did not not go up very much.

We think that a difference between the maps and quote, is that the quote says, "It is our Manifest Destiny to overspread the continent allotted by Providence for the free development of our multiplying millions."But the 1850 map shows that only but only 1% of the United States population in 1850 lived in the West even though they had so much land. A similarity we think is that the quote says of "Our multiplying millions." And the maps show that the population in 1790 was 3,929,214, and only the Northeast and the South. But the population in 1850 had multiplied to 23,054,152. Another similarity is the quote says "Our Manifest Destiny" And the second map shows that we expanded West/had Manifest Destiny.

Although the population grew by 19,124,938 some people still stayed near Midwest South and Northeast because it was so hard to travel.

The quote was made after Map 1. The quote was made 5 years before Map 2. The famous quote John L. O'Sullivan wrote feels a little bit self-centered towards the US. Though they technically bought the land from France, other people were on that land, specifically Indians. This sort of reminds me of the Land Rush, because the Indians were there first, yet they were technically on France's land. But I don't think the French really minded, because they would do something about it. Maybe they didn't care because the Indians would trade with them, because they had unique and expensive furs, and handmade weapons. So then the U.S. bought the Louisiana Purchase, and kicked the Indians out, to the west. Maybe it was because they were a different race? (we are studying the Civil Rights Act in writing and reading.) This is leading me to think that the United States was self-centered. And so was this quote. A basic translation of this quote could be: "Our destiny is to enlarge and populate the continent/country allowed by God for the free build of our multiplying population." This was a time for the U.S. to just build, add, rinse and repeat. They didn't think about other kinds of people. And sometimes, I don't fully blame them. The demand for agricultural and factorial goods was a LOT. And the added weight of pioneers, and a percentage of the population moving west.

I think the quote relates to the maps because the quote almost says they were growing by millions and the maps prove that they had grown by millions. Multiplied by millions over 60 years and that is not a lot of time to multiplied by millions and since over 60 years the south's population increased about 7 million people. And since in his quote he said "for the FREE" I think he said free because he it was almost easy because they did multiple by millions in just 60 years. Also he said "To OVERSPREAD the continent" The word overspread relates to the maps because they did overspread/takeover the continent. Later on he said by multiplying by millions and they took over the continent by multiplying by millions.

I think John stated this because the u.s was growing into a country with population 20,000,000 more people in 1850. people came there because of cotton and gold also in land. the u.s grew with land too. also new supplies too. there are now in 1850 23,054,152 in the u.s.

Beforehand in the map, everyone lived in the Northeast in 1790. It looks like people didn't discover any more land. That meant that the population grew. In the 1850s to the 1860s people moved out to the West (California). That made the Population grow from 3 million to 23 million! Asians came to help out and Mexicans helped out. Although Native Americans lived there, settlers kicked them out of the West, still our population gre

I think the quote is trying to say that their destiny is to grow the continent for free for the millions of people coming. I think this relates to the maps, because he is saying that the population grew by millions. And the map shows this because in the 1790s the population was 3,929,214 and in 1850 the population is 23,054,152. This shows a huge change in 60 years. I think it changed because the new materials, such as gold, and one other thing that motivated all the people to go west is the Luisiana Puchase.

I think the quote, and how the map changed go together because the map from the 1790's, to the 1850's, was a huge change and the quote states that the continent was muliplying. I think the quote states this because the Luisiana Purchase was a big chinge in the U.S. The Luisiana Purchase also helped with gold and riches, this helped with the people moving into the west.
