Author: Barabara Park
Publication: August 27, 1995
Reading Level: 3rd - 7th grade
Setting: suburbs
Synopsis: Barbara Park brings us the story of a girl named Phoebe’s story of the early days of coping with her younger brother’s death in Mick Harte Was Here. We begin the story knowing that Mick is no longer present and has passed away. Phoebe then goes in to tell us the story. Mick was a bright, rambunctious, humorous little boy that knew how to charm his way around a room. They were normal siblings, with quirky parents, and had a great and relatively normal family dynamic. Phoebe considered her parents a little bit too high strung with how particular they were about certain things, like weighing out exactly quarter pound patties for a hamburger dinner. All of this changed though, the day that Mick was riding his bike home from school and did not make it very far before he had a collision with a truck, and suffered from a severe traumatic brain injury that took his life. After Mick’s death we get the inside scoop on how his family handles it, especially Phoebe. Phoebe has a lot of questions and struggles with her grief, as well as understanding how her parents are grieving. Through Phoebe we see a lot of common struggles that people deal with after losing someone close to them. People saying the wrong things, people saying nothing, and even people saying mean things. Overall Phoebe handles these situations really well and with the help of her best friend, Zoe, she comes to the realization that Mick is everywhere and can hear her when she talks. Her grandma also helps her whole family get back on their feet and we see how even though their family will never be the same, they are able to live their life, not by moving on but by moving forward.
Activities:
1.
