It's  finding the consistent patterns within the music, such as the same chords, variations of notes, and variation of rhythms. Repetition can help build up the audience by getting louder and more intense. Repeated phrases or stanzas can feel very familiar to the audience, such as a chorus, which typically is the favorite part, or the most important. Repetition can be used for emphasis. Repetition can be used for emphasis. Repetition can be used for emphasis to show that this is the section you need to pay attention and get stuck in your head. If something is important at my job where I teach kids, I repeat it, at least 3 times. Repetition in music can also be used to make the non-repetitive parts stand out. People tend to notice what's 
d i f f e r e n t, so if there's a lot of repetition, the important part may be the non-repetitive piece. This is an example of what Ratcliff was saying about repetition: it is a tool that can be used right or wrong. Sometimes repetition is annoying, like a child who wont stop asking "why?" but it can also be utilized in a way, as previously stated that makes the song great. Ratcliff speaks for quite some time on James Brown's song "Ain't It Funky Now" Ratcliff speaks of this song with much praise. There's essentially just a certain set of phrases James says, and there's little variation in what the other instruments play. It' an aimless song, in terms of pop culture, if it were looked at as instrumental like jazz or classical music, it still doesn't have that change of feeling, that story-like feeling where something's happening. I personally, don't think James Brown utilized repetition as a tool very well in this song. In one of my favorite songs by Santana, Smooth, there's also a bit of repetition. The background instrumentals typically repeat throughout the entire song, and even Santana as a soloist on his guitar repeats himself, in rhythm, and in what notes he plays. He plays different chords, but none of them stand out as really different or a change. The singer, Rob Thomas, repeats himself in the same ways as Santana as well as lyrically, most obviously in the chorus.
