The Greek civil war was a war fought between citizens in the same country over a communist party wanting to take power- this makes it a civil war. According to an article, ¨The Germans set up a collaborationist government in Athens, but this government too lacked legitimacy and support, particularly once German economic exploitation of Greece created runaway inflation, acute shortages and eventually famine among the Greek civilian population.¨ (Greece Civil War, 2005)

Britain helped the anti-communist party by first getting Stalin to give Churchill power in Greece. In 1944 fighting between Britain and the communist group decreased the communist party in size. After the USA´s 1946 election, the communists formed the Democratic Army of Greece to gain power back, they received help from Yugoslavia and Albania and the British became worried and asked the United States for help. This became the Truman doctrine of 1947 and the war continued.
