It is our job to hook kids educationally and as they are pulled as many directions (as we all are) via technology.

I am a technology teacher and I am not sold on the idea of kids having their smartphones in the classroom. We need to have what technology they need provided in the classroom itself. Cell phones are a distraction. Kids will be kids and use the cell phones for other than what the lessons call for. Can they be useful for learning, yes. Can they also be used to record and take pictures without consent of other students or teachers. Yes, we need to have technology in the hands of the students. but the Smartphones are being used for many other things than learning, lets be real. If we want technology in the hands of students then the school needs to provide the technology in the classrooms.

There would be value in having students have their phone but many issues could arise. For instance, students are more interested on how many likes they got on an IG post.

First off, I would like to mention how important student / teacher relationships are. I am glad she made an emphasis on this. I really like the idea of Genius Hour. It gives students a real say on what they want to learn. Our middle school has a different cell phone policy that allows phones at the discretion of the teacher. I really liked what she had to say about cell phones. Truly, I would rather have a student misuse a cell phone and have that be a learning opportunity about digital citizenship. Many great points throughout. Great TedTalk.

I also agree with using technology to transform the learning process. However, I live in an area where not every child has a smartphone. I require technology to be left in the locker or turned off while in class. Kids always find a way to Snapchat during class regardless of what they are supposed to be doing and I don't like the live bullying that follows. There needs to be times they are checked out to technology and social media.

If it's just transferring a paper-and-pencil activity to an iPad, it's not purposeful (unless there is something on the other end that allows teachers to work smarter, not harder like a grading app or a way to give meaningful feedback).

I teach in a middle school. While I agree it's my job to teach students how to properly use technology, I've found having phones in lockers eliminates many issues that are not classroom-centered. I have zero problems with asking kids to bring their devices for certain activities. But the temptation for adolescents to use their phones all the time and not focus on the task at hand it too great to allow for phones on a daily basis.

The first six weeks of school are all about fostering these relationships. It is exhausting, but totally worth it.

I work very hard to integrate whatever tech is available to me into my classroom (this year the only iPads I'll have will be ones that I own!), but I work just as hard on building and sustaining and growing those relationships!
This was a most enlightening video for reimagining classrooms and how teachers interact with students. No doubt, the education I received is completely different from today's perspective. Having taught over 30 years, I can see the BIG changes made in education over time. Yet, I know that there are many younger teachers who were taught in similar classrooms I began my teaching in. Where is the drive for moving ahead? It almost is as though we are all caught in a time warp. Unless we change, success will be difficult. The way to see this is: It begins with me.

I agree that the relationship between a passionate teacher and the student is the foundation for learning. I have seen great abuse of cell phone use in every classroom I've ever been in that allows them. I think having cellphones at school during the day should not be allowed, unless the entire school has learned/been presented with information on how to use them constructively. They can become a distraction so fast that if a school is going to let students have them they need to know how to use them to their advantage during the school day.

I LOVED this TedTalk! I feel that a lot of points that Kayla made were very valid and pushed the limits. She brought up quite a few points on topics that many educators and schools worry about or tip-toe around. I completely agree that we need to be providing our students with authentic and meaningful connections to technology, and allow them to share their knowledge of something that children in today's society know tons about. I also liked her point on students', and our own, digital footprints. We want to make sure that not only what our own footprint's look like, but foster those of our young students as well. Something I'm super interested in trying is the QR codes on the back of books to allow students to listen and follow along!

I am as inspired today as I was the first time I heard her speak. I love the idea of re-imagining the learning space and embracing the world that our students are a part of. I love flipping the classroom and allowing the students to be the teachers--not only do the students love learning from their peers but it frees me up to help support students in other ways. I strongly agree with Kayla about relationships being the foundation of a successful classroom. When students build trust relationships with their teachers they are not afraid to try new things and embrace failure as a learning opportunity.

I agree whole-heartedly with much of what I heard, however, with all of the new laws and rules involving internet usage and safety it is becoming more and more difficult to successfully use technology in many of the ways described. This is frustrating to me. Our district blocks YouTube, social media, and many other avenues that could be used. We have to have each app that we use vetted and approved before they are added and allowed to be used by students. This, again, limits what our students can do and how they learn. Twenty-first century classrooms would be great if there was money available to bring us into the 21st century that would be amazing! Can't wait for the reality to come true!

Technology is an instrument, a tool, for children to easily access ideas, and spontaneously create by gathering information instantly, collaborating with others, and inserting images to support their art-storybook-math-science-social studies projects. Often, when working with students with special needs, a communication component that the average learner is ready and able to skillfully show, is limited. Technology can help a student express their thoughts, feelings, and reciprocal language to others. A shy person, or a person with limited print abilities, can speak into a computer and draw up images to support their comprehension of a topic, into a film for submission in place of an essay. Thank you. Diane M

I am so divided on this idea of technology. I couldn't agree more that this is our world, this is they of communication our students use. We need to teach them to use it in an appropriate way. I also agree it can open so many new doors for students' learning. However, it seriously concerns me. If this really is how people communicate these days, how are they expected to be able to hold normal conversations, face to face with people? If school becomes so student and technology led, what use are we going to have for teachers? Are teachers even going to be expected to teach anything? It worries me for the profession of teaching since people might be able to look at teachers and think 'oh my ipad can teach me that.' If kids start thinking this, there are going to be more little boys like the one she mentioned about not wanting to go to school because they're all going to think they can just learn it from the internet.

Wow, while this Ted Talk took place 5 years ago, there is still so much food for thought. It's easy as a classroom teacher to settle into what is comfortable, which is why the idea of not having to be experts ourselves resonated with me. Turn the students loose to try new things or even become the experts themselves is an important idea. I feel like I generally do a good job of incorporating technology into classroom instruction, but it is easy for that to turn into essentially using Chromebooks as expensive paper and pencils. I hope to be more intentional in my use of technology, especially in light of our distance learning requirements with COOVID-19.

I learned about how much of a tool youtube is used in education and children yet it is not allowed as a resource to our students. I agreed with how important it is to integrate technology into our everyday teaching, it is a wonderful way for students to connect and feel involved in their learning. I do think that students should be allowed to use their phones as a recourse in the classroom, I think it is a useful tool and I also think it gives older students a sense of ownership of their method of learning.

I like the idea of students recording books for other students to use, this is something that I am going to share with my fellow teachers. I agree that technology should not be used just for the sake of using technology, there should be a planned and purposeful reason for doing so. One thing that I slightly disagree with is the idea that is it the school/teachers responsibility for students to have a positive digital footprint. Although we need to teach digital citizenship and promote safe and ethical use, parents.guardians are still the ones responsible for their children and their actions.

I found this video very interesting! I had never heard of genius hour and look forward to looking into it. We don't have a cellphone hotel, but we do have pockets within the classroom for students to place their phones, this is not to keep them from using them, it is to teach them about using them at appropriate times. I believe it is important to teach them etiquette with the phones before they enter the workforce. I struggle with "If it's right for kids, it's right" What does that mean? For as many great technologies made for kids, I feel there are equally negative or inappropriate technologies. I may be reading this out of context or reading too much into the thought. I loved hearing "if it's boring on paper, it's boring on an ipad" That could not be more real.

I was very inspired by this Ted Talk.

I learned that there are far more resources out there than I had been familiar with! I will do more searching and will start finding ways to highlight some of the resources this Ted Talk included. And I definitely agree that technology must be used frequently with purpose in the classroom. I am not very good at doing that, but I do know how important it is for students to be as technologically savvy as possible in this day and age. I didn't disagree with much from this Ted Talk... I suppose what I agree with the least was creating a social media page for my classroom. I find so much ugliness on social media that I wouldn't necessarily want my own class to be accessible to those who are slinging anger, misinformation, and ugly words and thoughts.

She had a love of students which is so important. I teach mainly younger grades as a specialist, so I don't neccessarily agree with okaying phone use, since most of my students don't have one yet. Perhaps she could have specified grade levels when referring to the cell phone hotels. I agree that finding a way to connect with students, even the ones that don't come ready to learn is vital. Just as she did with her student, Christian.

One thing that really struck me was the way schools treat technology entering a building. It often feels like rather than acknowledging and learning more about the tech that students are using there is often a jump towards the removal of technology. Rather schools need to embrace and teach it- create and deliver lessons on digital literacy rather than ignoring its existence. When we reinforce how productive use of technology is helpful, creative, and engaging, we allow students to see its value in education, productivity, and creativity rather than just entertainment.

The whole idea of connecting classrooms within a school or the whole world by having someone read a book and place a QR code on it, is brilliant! I have done something similar to 'Genius Hour' where my students can start researching an animal or a topic, with a 'project approach' stance. Then they decide how they show what they learned.... but I'm more books, less tech for their research... need to tweet that, I guess! Love the idea of embracing the students of today!

I really think that what the speaker said at the end is key. Passionate teachers make or break a classroom. Teachers must be determined to learn, not just willing to follow a mandate. Often I see the struggle for students because teachers won't engage with the process of learning new things. Challenging ourselves to learn something new, will translate to helping our students continue to struggle through a challenge to sucess.

There were many good things in the video. I think the most important message is that technology use must be intentional. Boring work sheet is still boring on an iPad. I really like the idea of students, recording themselves, reading books and sharing that with other classmates. I do disagree with students using their own devices as there is no way to monitor them and ensure students are actually doing the work they are supposed to be doing. The same can be achieved with students using school iPads.

WOW! I loved this video. It is so powerful and true! I love her message about if it is boring on paper, it will be boring on an iPad. I think we all want our classes to be engaging, educational and fun, but with standards and curriculum requirements it can be hard to find the how and the purpose behind the technology we use.

I feel like my school has really been focusing on cutting down on printing, so I end up having students do it on their chromebooks. I think I need to stop and think about if there is a more purposeful activity that my students should be doing.
