From early on Torvald makes Nora feel less than. He discredits her as a woman due to her thinking. During this time, finances were managed by men and women were considered to be spenders and irresponsible with money. The tone of his voice gives off a condescending tone, not necessarily that of a husband. Torvald is displaying more qualities of a father figure rather than a husband. Although he thinks of Nora as a child, he reminds her that they have managed to keep their lives out of debt, without having to repay nor borrow from someone else. Reminding her causes her to refrain from wishful spending, even if it means having more money. This could also suggest that Nora was never taught about money or finances, which is why husbands during the Victorian Era, were more so fathers.
