Identify the struggling students who are exhibiting signs of struggle: frequent misunderstanding of instructions, consistently low grades, difficulty retaining material, lack of confidence, etc.

Step 3: Document

Collect data on the identified student's performance. Be sure to identify the strengths as well as the weaknesses. Review past academic records if possible, check for patterns. Be sure to note how the student is behaving, and any patterns noticed about schoolwork (frequently forgetting materials, often not bringing materials to school, turning in work late, messy homework, refusal to work).

Step 4: Consult

Contact the ESE director, as well as the appropriate guidance counselor. Contact parent/guardian and gather insights about the student's language exposure and learning history. Provide concerns, and all documentation collected for the student to the ESE support team at school. They will assist in observing the student and determining if the challenges are rooted in language acquisition or a learning disability.

Step 5: Implement

Apply targeted teaching strategies, and the accommodations set in place by the program found to be most suitable for the student (ELL/ESE). Set achievable goals with the student and define support measure with the CSCS support staff.

Step 6: Support

Regularly review the student's progress and modify the IEP or support strategies as needed. Adjust interventions based on the students response. Communicate frequently with all stakeholders involved in the student's education.
