Much water sources around Israel is saltwater. One solution to the scarce amount of water is that Israel has made desalination facilities to remove the salt from the salt water. Compare these last two pictures of the Jordan River.  One picture is from 1938 and the other is a later view(could not find exact date of more recent picture).  If looking at the pictures in comparison, there is a lot more land cover by water in the older picture. In the newer picture, it is easily seen where there was once water on land but has now dried up. Some explanations for this problem include the lack of water in the area means that water has to be taken from the river for everyday use.
