Students' academic language and language proficiency is a concern at the lower elementary level.  
All content areas have their own academic vocabulary and using a variety of learning opportunities that targets visual, tactile, auditory and senses engages all students in language development. 
The visual arts provides a unique opportunity for students to use academic language using the elements of art.  The concepts include: texture, line, shape, form, value, color, space, symmetry, patterns, and movement.
Students are given multiple opportunities to discuss, explore and learn concepts. 
Example:
  • Texture rubs in nature, tree, leaves
  • Drawing a variety of texture
  • Application to art work.
Fostering Conversation for Diverse learners:
  • Peer Feedback/feedback
  • Open ended questions
  • Make connections to self, others and real life
  • Presentations
  • Reflection on work
  • Critique of work and others

Visual arts can be integrated with literature and illustration.

  • TPR in exploring texture
  • Texture rubs in nature, trees, leaves
  • Texture rubbings on man made objects
  • Draw a variety of texture
  • Create and draw a monster using a variety of texture.
