The first one, had the chapters divided according to the different relationships between cinema and advertising, while now I wanted to try focusing more just on the evolution of James Bond’s advertising, structuring the chapters according to different types of advertising and promotion.

The idea came from some feedbacks, but also inspired by the video interview I found on YouTube, where these two people talk about the evolution of 007’s advertising.

That video opened my mind to other aspects of the topic that I decided to take into my dissertation, like the fact that the audience of James Bond and the audience that the advertising campaigns try to reach, changed throughout the years.

For example, in the ‘60s and ‘70s advertising was aimed at kids and families, they used to sell figurines and toys for toys with coupons for cinema tickets, while now the audience is more adult, gadgets and ads are all about expensive and sophisticated objects.

Another interesting point, that came out from the video, is the use of music video as another promotional means of the movie; especially in the ‘80s with the rise of MTV, when music videos were a big thing, they were a great way to promote the movie with the help of famous singers and bands.

Even today, the songs for the title sequences of the new Bond movies are written by famous artists and realized before the motion picture to rise hype and attention on the movie and also the singer.

After a week of thought, I realized that the structure of the dissertation wasn’t working as I planned the week before.

I went back to my initial notes, from when I started the preparation last year, and I decided that I want the focus of my dissertation on the relationships between cinema and advertising more than on the specific pieces of advertising of James Bond.

I chose the 007 franchise because it gives me the chance to explore the different advertisings that have been used in a range of 60 years but still focus on the topic of advertising for cinema and cinema for advertising.

I rewrote my chapter plan, structuring it with a chapter about the general relationships, theories, and history of the two subjects and then the other two chapters focusing on practical examples inside the James Bond franchise.

Whitin this project, I miscalculate the time and the work to do, so I got near to the formative whit very little content. My plan for the next months, is to create a plan of work and balance the motion graphic work with the research for the dissertation. 

Once I had the feedbacks from the formative, I wrote them down on my document, where I made notes to know what I have to improve, add and amend.

I went back to the research and notes I made during Diss. Prep., and through the previous months to have clear ideas on the material I already have and that I can use or not in the final piece.
