I have lived the cultural diversity, to an extent. My parents were born and grown up in regions of southern Greece, and came in Athens, Greece (the capital town in Greece) when they were adults. I was born and grown up in Athens, Greece. Athens is a city, where the cultural diversity is more evident (comparativerly to other regions in Greece) for two reasons: There haw been internal migration to Athens after WWII. When Greece became host country (for migrants, in the 1990s) Athens lived the cultural diversity to a greater extent . Therefore I feel that the cultural capital of teachers is improtrant in order to manage the cultural diversity.
It is extremely useful for the teachers to reflect on what they have lived with regard to the cultural diversity.
I think that the biggest challenge is to try to understand the cultural diversityTo what extent this diversity works in the context of the other, what is the utility of this diversity in the context of the other and so forth, what is the puprose of this diversity in the context of the other and so forth.

The intercultural dialogue and the intercultural understanding are very important and these should be taught at school.
There is an issue in case that these values contradict the families of the students' values (those families cultivate racism and far right ideas). In the school I work this school term there are such cases. I would be grateful if Erika and Alicia could give us a piece of advice, how to manage kids from families which support racism and far right ideas.
Another issue is in case that cultural diversity is against human rights, egality etc, fundemental values of the Europe (marriage of girls under the lowest legal age, violence against women etc). Alicia's and Erika's views with regard to this issue is very important for me.

In the school where I work there are some Romani pupils and pupils coming from Albania. The Romani pupils have some knowledge of the Greek language but this is poor enough for their age. The Romani pupils attend some extra lessons for the greek language. The majority of the pupils who come from Albania are born in Greece and attend the Greek school from the pre-school education. Few pupils who come from Albania, have a poor knowledge of the Greek language, and these pupils attend extra lessons for the Greek language.

2.1 Now think more concretely about the ideas presented by Alicia and Erika. Can you apply some of the activities or at least the principles behind them to your subject, your school community, your students? Share either some activities you have used with your students or briefly describe how one of the activities suggested in the video could be adapted to your own context.

The ideas presented by Alicia and Erika are very interesting. This Christmas I taught the Christmas song "Silent night" in the following languages: English, French, German, Albanian (the school's migrant pupils come from Albania) and Greek. I told the pupils how this song was writen (in Austria, at Christmas 1814) and made known to the whole Christian world (in the school I work during this school term there are no muslim pupils).

As I teach music (and not languages) I try to help all the pupils (migrants and local) through songs. At the first two classes of the primary school (6-7 years old) I teach them some songs with regard to the numbers 1-12, to the Letters of the greek alpabet, to the days of the week, to the months of the year etc. At the next two classes of the primary school (8-9 years old) I teach them some songs to help them for some Greek Grammar phenomena. Such songs are a powerful tool for the learning of the greek language.

What actions at the level of your school exist that help community building? Do you have colleagues who are more sceptical about such activities when it comes to cultural diversity? How do you convince / deal with them? Share your experiences.

There is a class identity, but I have not contributed a lot to this, as I teach music. There have been projects and there are some other projects running with regard to the diversity and community building.

All colleagues are skeptical about the lack of communication with the parents of migrant pupils (the parents of our Romani pupils do their best to communicate with the school staff). The parents of migrant pupils do not come to school to have a cooperation with the teachers although their competence in teaching language (Greek) is sufficient.

Additionally, a part of local pupils’ families support far right values, which makes teachers skeptical, how effective are the projects we are running and our work with regard cultural diversity in general.

I have worked this exercise of empathy last November in a seminar for teachers in Patras, Greece. I have traveled in a number of European countries (Italy, Spain, UK, Austria, Germany, Cyprus, Russia, Hungary, Switzerland) and I have lived in Athens (Athens is the capital town of Greece, where the cultural diversity is more evident comparatively to other regions in Greece) for about 30 years. During my studies in the Department of Musicology (at the National and Kapodestrian University of Athens) I attended some subjects which had to do with ethnomusicology, and ethnomusicology deals a lot with the cultural diversity. During the school terms 1998-2000 I have worked to a junior high school in the center of Athens, which was multicultural and my interaction with those pupils was very helpful to me. I have attended seminars (such as this one) with regard to the management of the cultural diversity. That’s how my open mindedness and empathy have developed so far.

My pupils at school are not so open minded and empathic, as the society they live (Katochi, Aitolia & Akarnania, Greece, a village of about 3,000 inhabitants) is not virtually multicultural (there is a small number of migrants coming from Albania mainly).

I would like to work “What is privilege” activity and other such activities but not during this school term. I would like to work it for the first time in secondary education (I work both in primary and secondary education, and this school term I work in the primary education).

2.8 As you watch the videos reflect on which model is most present in your country and how are some of these questions addressed in your school? How is the public space in your school and classroom organized? Is it more according to a model of co-existence or integration? For example, are students expected to assimilate to certain cultural norms at school or in your classroom? Is there a public space for and culture of communication and debate when it comes to different cultural norms?

At the school where I work, the public space and classroom are organized according to the model of integration. Although migrant pupils (who come mainly from Albania) could talk each other in their own mother tongue at school (Albanian), they never do so. They are rather reluctant to talk about their country of origin. It is noteworthy that the school where I work during this school term is located in a village of about 3,000 inhabitants in western Greece (Katochi, Aitolia & Akarnania, Greece), where there is not virtually public space for different cultural forms.
