Part 1- Character Traits- Walter

Walter is more of a greedy person since he thinks that money is everything and he always wants people to be happy, though he turns things bad. “What’s the matter with you all! I didn’t make this world! It was give to me this way! Hell, yes, I want pearls ‘round my wife’s neck. Ain’t she supposed to wear no pearls? Somebody tell me—tell me, who decides which women is suppose to wear pearls in this world. I tell you I am a man—and I think my wife should wear some pearls in this world!” p. 143, This shows everyone that he wants everything to be happy. Though Walter turns everything into a disaster; Trying to invest in alcohol, not going to work, everything falls apart around him almost every time he opens mouth. Whenever Walter tries to be a team player he always leaves the field with at-least one injury. Which is always a bad thing, since Walter wants himself to be happy and not his family since he wad more arrogant and together the family would have him change his mind since Walter was basically a giant and the family was trying to take him down. Yet Walter always gets back up.

I also find Walter more of a stingy jerk. Walter only cares about the $$ so he can be happy and not be concerned for the rest of his life. Mama: “Son, how come you talk so much ‘bout money?” Walter: “Because, it is life, Mama!” Mama: “Oh—so now its life. Money is life. Once upon a time freedom use to be life—now its money. I guess the world really do change…” Walter: “No—it was always money, Mama. We just didn’t know about it.” p. 74 This proves my point of Walter was waiting for Mama's check, so he can steal it and invest in alcohol. As that means not caring for Beneatha's school or anything else other than himself which is the opposite of a caring brother and father figure. Walter only cared about himself which I am pretty sure as a teenager that other children would not approve of Walter as a father.

I find Walter not much of a sympathetic character since he is mainly failing as a father figure for Travis since they have been living in the same apartment for who knows how long and has become more of either a drunken wreck or an anger fueled madhouse.

There are many colors used in this art to show that not everything can be black and white. The image shows the deadly sin of greed, and can be related to Walter since at the beginning all he wants is money for himself. This painting gives off the feel that once you start holding on to stuff for a large amount of time, negative things can happen if you are not careful. It relates to Walter through the feel that people who hold back on people show that greed can make you a bad person.

"Greed is out,
Yes, yes, let’s shout,
Again and again:
Greed is out.
Let’s spout, let’s shout!
Realized pain
And unrealized gain
Are not taxable."
These lines from "Greed is Out" by Herbert Logerie shows that greed can negatively affect one's view of the world which can show that people are born into riches and others are not. Walter wants the money to himself so he can open a liquor store and sell alcohol to people, which gets him more money in the long run. Even though Walter tries to be a family man, he cannot get his eyes off of money. Thanks to this it has actually negatively affected Travis, which can mean sin is upon the Younger family.

Class / Money
Walter to George: “And you—ain’t you bitter, man? Ain’t you just about had it yet? Don’t you see no stars gleaming that you can’t reach out and grab? … Here I am a giant—surrounded by ants. Ants who can’t even understand what it is the giant is talking about” p.85
Class and money are related to the point that Walter is greedy, yet is more of a serious person in his own right. Though now he is being classified as inferior since he lives in an apartment, and George lives in a nice house as well as color. Besides Walter would kill for George's life and would be happy. Thanks to Walter being poor, whatever money that gets in the house he would always try to invest it in alcohol. Also Walter really wants to have a life's work. Walter in a way is like Scrooge McDuck since he tries to take money and keep it for himself.
