Who are the powerful people in the text? Who are the powerless? Who receives the most attention?

Everyone who posses money/ wealth hold the power in the text. In the novel the text mainly revolves around the wealthy people in New York. Tom and Daisy who live in the East Egg and contain a high standing in society are shown to have great power. Along with them Gatsby is considered powerful for his wealth. In the Novel Daisy while with Gatsby had ended up accidentally killing someone and managed to get out of it unscathed due to her protection from wealth.
QUOTE:
"He ran over Myrtle like you'd run over a dog and never even stopped his car."
Tom is blatantly lying and knows that Daisy is the one who ran over Myrtle yet is still going to protect their status despite the death that has been caused from their lies.

Why do the powerful have power? Why are powerless powerless?

Myrtle is an example of the powerless in the novels society. Despite Myrtles determination to become powerful by her relations with Tom she was doomed powerless. Myrtle didn't live in the east Egg and didn't have a wealthy family. The readers are able to see what Myrtle could not. She was never going to be powerful because she will never be "a Daisy." Myrtle had a different life style and standing than any of the others and was even murdered by the person she wished to be.
QUOTE:
"An Oxford man! Like hell he is! He wears a pink suit!" (122)
This quote demonstrates Toms strong beliefs in standing and appearance. Tom The way that people look and dress helps classify their standing in society.

Do the powerful people oppress the powerless? How?

Yes, the powerful tend to stay selfish and uncaring for the powerless. Tom and Daisy express their oppression towards the powerless after Daisy had killed Myrtle (who is powerless) and their only motive is to keep quite and get away with it. Tom had been in relation with Myrtle and hadn't even cared that she had died or that it was Daisy who had done it. Tom had built a life with Daisy and her with him. Tom provided support and protection for Daisy with his wealthy standing. As for Gatsby he was a less reliable source for her. Though Gatsby had put his entire life together for Daisy and gained his power for her she had still decided on Tom for the power protection.
QUOTE:
"Was she killed?"
"Yes."
"I thought so." (143)
This proves that Daisy is reliant on Tom and they are selfish to protect each other. There is no care for the powerless.

Is there alienation and fragmentation evident in any of the characters? If so whom-- the powerful? The powerless?

In reality Daisy leans to be more similar to Myrtle than she may think. Because Daisy is a woman she is born significantly less powerful than the men. Similarly Daisy had been with Tom for the standing and power (the same as Myrtle.) Without Either option of Tom or Gatsby she is doomed powerless. Because Daisy has a lower status on her own she is in a constant state of doubt and scheming.
QUOTE:
"Half an hour later when we walked out of the room the pearls were around her neck and the incident was over. Next day at 5 o'clock she married Tom without so much as a shiver." (81)
This imply's that Daisy is mainly marrying Tom for his money and power. She enjoys the life of pleasures and palaces so much that she would push away all doubts and go through with marrying him.

What does society value? Are possessions required for their usefulness or their social value?

In the novel society doesn't value family, and or hard work but rather they value status/standing, money, and instant pleasures.
QUOTE:
"They had spent a year in France, for no particular reason, and then drifted here and there unrestfully wherever people played polo and were rich together." (10)
This demonstrates Daisy and Toms easy instant pleasures. They take their life completely for granted by spending their endless money on meaningless situations.
